Telegram web domain blocked on Jio and Hathway

After reports of Reddit and Indiankanoon.org being blocked, it appears that Telegram Web (web.telegram.com) has been blocked in multiple states on Jio and Hathway connections, as per user reports to MediaNama. Neither service provider has specified a reasons for the block yet, or cited an order from the Department of Telecom asking them to block it.

Currently, Telegram web is inaccessible on:

  • CSP – Jio, Andhra Pradesh
  • CSP – Jio, Maharashtra
  • CSP – Jio, New Delhi, another user reported that Telegram web was blocked in Jio New Delhi
  • ISP – Hathway, Chennai

The site is accessible on:

  • CSP – Airtel, New Delhi
  • ISP – Spectra, Delhi NCR
  • ISP – Excitel, New Delhi
  • ISP – ACT Fibernet New Delhi
  • CSP – Jio, Mumbai
  • CSP – Vodafone, Mumbai
  • CSP – Airtel, Mumbai
  • ISP – Hathway Mumbai
  • ISP – JioGigaFiber, Mumbai
  • CSP – Idea Cellular, Maharashtra
  • ISP – Hathway Karnataka
  • CSP – Airtel, Karnataka
  • CSP – BSNL, Goa
  • CSP – Jio, Chennai
  • CSP – Vodafone, Assam

Multiple reports of Telegram web being blocked since a month

About a month ago, a crowdsourced report by the Internet Freedom Foundation found that the Telegram web domain, and subdomains (like Telegram.me, web.telegram.org etc) were blocked on Jio, Airtel and Hathway. The user reports came from across the country including from Delhi, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Telangana, Goa, West Bengal, Punjab, and Haryana.

Reddit and Indiankanoon.org blocked

We reported earlier this month that Reddit was blocked by multiple mobile service providers in some circles of Jio and Vodafone, and ISPs like You Broadband and JioFiber, without specifying any reason for the block. Users later reported that the site was online on several service providers.

Last week the website of Indiankanoon.org was blocked on multiple Jio connections in multiple circles, Jio had cited a government order which ordered the ban. However, Indiankanoon.org later did become accessible on Jio.
