20 March: More users have reported that Reddit was now working on

  • CSP – Airtel Mumbai, Jaipur, and Jio Mumbai and Kolkata
  • CSP – Vodafone Mumbai
  • (service resumed on) CSP – Vodafone Karnataka
  • ISP – Alliance Broadband Kolkata
  • ISP – You Broadband Pune

and not working on CSP Jio Bangalore circle. Another user reported that NYTimes was blocked on Alliance Broadband Kolkata, and You Broadband Pune as well.

You Broadband’s IT head Harindra told MediaNama that You Broadband had not initiated any such block across its locations.

14 March: Reddit is being blocked by multiple CSPs including some circles of Jio, Vodafone, and ISPs like You Broadband, Jio Fiber. Both the CSPs and ISPs have not specified a reason for the block. Note that this block comes a week after we reported that Reddit was being blocked on Jio Fiber and Hathway for the last 8-10 days.

Currently, Reddit is inaccessible on:

  • CSP – Jio Maharashtra (verified by MediaNama)
  • CSP – Jio Punjab, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh (user reported to MediaNama) – update
  • CSP – Vodafone Pune, Mumbai, Maharashtra; Kolkata, West Bengal; Bangalore, Karnataka (verified by MediaNama and user reported)
  • ISP – You Broadband Pune (verified by MediaNama)
  • ISP – Spectranet Pune (user reported to MediaNama)
  • ISP – Jio Fiber Kolkata (user reported to MediaNama)

Both the CSPs and ISPs have not specified any reason for the block, nor was there a precedence, plus there’s no order from the Department of Telecom asking them to block it.

Are you a Reddit user? Please email me at sneha@medianama.com to tell us whether or not Reddit is working on your ISP and/or CSP. Thank you!

Jio, Hathway block Reddit

Earlier this week, we reported that Reddit was being blocked mostly on Jio mobile and GigaFiber, and Hathway for the last 8-10 days. This block seemed inconsistent since some Reddit users reported that Reddit was working on their Jio connections. One Reddit user reported the app working okay but not the mobile website. There is also a list of threads discussing the blocking of Reddit here. A few users have reported that Reddit is back on Hathway. Some reported that changing the DNS let Jio users browse Reddit.

At the time, according to Reddit threads, it was working on:

  • Assam Jio 4G
  • Ahmedabad Jio 4G
  • Mumbai Jio 4G
  • Madurai (unspecified service provider)

VPN, torrents and sites blocked by ISPs and CSPs

About a month ago, we had reported that Internet users across India were reporting instances of their telecom provider or ISP blocking websites, torrents, VPN services and Telegram (web), over a 2-week period, according to a crowdsourced document created by the Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF). IFF said that these users were spread across metros as well as smaller cities.
