We are hosting this session with support from Facebook and Amazon. We intend to discuss the implications of data localisation, understanding the push for it, with a specific focus on FinTech - the pros, cons, challenges and what serves to protect consumer interests in this law. Apply to attend here: tinyurl.com/namafintechlocalisation Fintech businesses are typically not constrained by geographical boundaries, and can thus scale faster than conventional financial services because of technology being applied at scale. Data localisation mandates that the data be collected, processed and stored in India. The Reserve Bank of India has mandated the localisation of financial data. The Srikrishna committee has recommended data mirroring, not localisation, and has identified financial data as sensitive personal data. There are challenges related to the availability of physical infrastructure in India, the impact on global storage and processing systems already in place, and the privacy and security of data in India, especially in the absence of a data protection law in India, and challenges related to the operationalisation of localisation and mirroring. This will be a curated, invitation-only event under the Chatham House Rule, to enable more open-ness in participation.
