Social networking site Facebook has crossed the 2 billion registered users mark on Tuesday. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, made an official announcement.
The company, in a blog, said each day, more than 175 million people share a Love reaction, and on average, over 800 million people like something on Facebook. More than 1 billion people use Groups every month. The company added that it is launching personalized video to celebrate the userbase and these videos will appear on a users News Feed. Users will also see a message thanking them on their News Feed, if he/she will see a message reacts to a friends post, wishes them birthday or creates groups. The company will also be featuring fun facts about how people are contributing to communities and in the US, inspiring stores of people will be shared. All these can be accessed either through Goodaddsup or will be on the users news feed.
For Q1-2017, total monthly users grew 17% year-over-year to 1.94 billion people, from the same period a year earlier. And year-on-year, daily active users in that quarter increased by 18% to 1.28 billion as per Forbes. As of March 2017, the company has 1.28 billion daily active users on average and 1.94 billion monthly active users as of March 31, 2017.
Facebook over the years: Facebook was launched on February 4, 2004. It had reached 25 million users in January 2006. This doubled to 50 million users in October 2007, 100 million users in August 2008, 200 million users in April 2009 and 300 million in September 2009, 400 million in February 2010, and 500 million users in July 2010. At the time of filing the IPO in February 2012, the company had 845 million users, of which India accounted for 46 million users. It hit the 1 billion users mark in October 2012. In September last year, it had 1.76 billion users.
Facebook-owned messenger: In August 2011, Facebook launched Messenger as a standalone messaging app. In January last year Messenger had crossed 800 million users, and in less than 6 months, Messenger crossed the 1 billion mark in July. Currently, it has 1.2 billion users.
Facebook-owned Instagram: Facebook acquired Instagram in 2012, at that time, the photo sharing app had 30 million users on iOS platform. In June last year, Instagram crossed the mark of 500 million users. Within 6 months, it had added another 100 million users. Currently, it has 700 million users.
Facebook-owned Whatsapp: The messaging app was acquired by Facebook in 2014. In October 2015, Whatsapp had 900 million users globally with 142 million users in India. In February last year, it crossed the 1 billion users mark. Currently, it has 1.2 billion users. In May this year, Whatsapp users in India used the video calling feature for a total of 50 million minutes per day, the highest aggregate usage in the world. Globally, Whatsapp had recorded over 340 million video calling minutes per day, spread across 55 million video calls made each day.
Recent developments at Facebook
– Facebook announced earlier this month, that it has introduced new tools to protect profile pictures for its Indian users.
– Last month, the company started testing Cross App notification. The feature shows notifications from Facebook, Messenger as well as Instagram in the Facebook window itself. It allows users to switch between these apps instantly and keeps them informed about the activities on their profiles in each of the apps.
– In May, Facebook had also added more features similar to Snapchat on Instagram and the social networking site itself.
