Idea launches music and video streaming service at Rs 49 per month

Idea Cellular today launched a bouquet of online services including music streaming service Idea Music Lounge, subscription-based Video streaming service Idea Movie Club and gaming portal Idea Games Spark. The details of each service and how its stacks up against existing players are given below.

Idea Music Lounge is priced at Rs 49 a month which offers unlimited downloads. However, this is being offered for free until 31st March 2017. Music Lounge has a library of 2 million tracks from International artists, Bollywood, and 13 Indian languages. It is available for download on Google’s Play Store as of now.

Idea Movie Club, a video streaming service is also priced at Rs 49 per month with free promotional access to all Idea customers till March 31st, 2017. The service claims to have over 4000 movies, 90+ Live TV channels, 1000+ TV shows and other curated videos. The app can be downloaded on iOS and Google Play.

Idea Games Spark is a mobile gaming portal that offers over 1,500 game listings, which can be accessed by non-Idea users as well. Games are available on a monthly subscription basis (at Rs 29 per month) and the company plans to introduce different tariff models such as pay per download and freemium in the future.

Idea’s competitor Airtel recently unveiled bundle of apps and content through partnerships with video streaming service Ditto TV and online publisher Juggernaut Books. This being offered with its existing set of apps under the Wynk brand: Wynk Music, Wynk Games, Wynk Movies.  Reliance Jio also offers video streaming through its JioTV app. JioTV app claims to provide access to 6000 HD movies and 40 HD TV channels via its own library. It also claims to have a library of 10 million tracks in 10 languages under JioMusic service.

Other video and music streaming providers

Idea’s streaming services will also compete with a sea of streaming providers in the Indian market, who already have stacked up substantially more number of titles, content, movies, tracks onto its library. Although Idea has priced its services at a substantially lower rate, here is what Idea is competing with:

Music streaming players

-Google Play Music with more than 35 million tracks and is open to all Android users.
-Saavn which claims more than 20 million tracks and streams to 196 countries in 13 languages with 18 million users.
– Guvera which claims to have 7 million users in India and a global user base of 14 million in June.
–Bharti Airtel’s music streaming application Wynk said that it had crossed 25 million downloads playing 15 million songs daily as of June 2016.
–Gaana claims more than 28 million downloads with a user base of 15.2 million
-Hungama claims to have crossed 50 million monthly active users worldwide with 2.5 million pieces of music content and 5000 movies.

Video streaming players

-VOOT claims more than 10 million app downloads with over 15 million monthly active users across mobile and web.
– Eros Now claims to offer over 5,000 films apart from television shows, music video and audio tracks to a registered user base of over 49.6 million across 135 countries.
– Hotstar currently claims to offer over 50,000 hours of TV content and movies across 8 languages,
– nexGTv has over 155 Live TV channels with movies, TV Shows, and videos, 100 movie titles.
Apart from this, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video also debuted in India last year.
