A total of 13.59 million Prepaid Payment Instrument  (PPI) transactions worth Rs 6.08 billion were generated, for September 2013, according to the latest numbers from the Reserve Bank of India. This includes 8.74 million m-wallet transactions worth Rs 2.33 billion, 4.81 million PPI card transactions worth Rs 1.91 billion and 0.04 million paper voucher transactions worth Rs 1.84 billion. RBI however has not provided any break down  across different types of wallet – closed wallet, open wallet, semi-closed and semi-open wallets.

Volume of Transactions

– The total number of PPI transactions stood at 13.59 million transactions for September 2013, a decrease from 14.12 million transactions in August 2013 and an increase from 12.4 million transactions in July 2013.

– Among the different instruments, only m-Wallet transactions have seen an increase during the period July – September 2013. The number of transactions increased to 8.74 million transactions in September 2013 from 8.68 million transactions in August 2013 and 7.94 million transactions in December 2012.

Value of Transactions

– The total value of transactions has increased to Rs 6.08 billion in September 2013 from Rs 6.01 billion in August 2013 and decreased from Rs 6.18 billion in July 2013. This indicates that although the volume of transactions have dropped from August to September 2013, the value per transaction has increased for Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPI).

– Similarly, the value per transaction during July 2013 was much higher than August and September 2013 considering that the volume of transactions were much lower in July 2013.

– The value of m-wallet transactions have decreased to Rs 2.33 billion in September 2013 from Rs 2.36 billion in August 2013 and increased from Rs 2.2 billion in July 2013 indicating that the value per transaction has been decreasing even with an increase in the volume of transactions.

– The value of PPI cards have decreased to Rs 1.91 billion in September 2013 from Rs 2.02 billion in August 2013 and Rs 1.96 in July 2013. This indicates that the value per transaction has dropped for PPI cards during this period although the volume of transactions have been increasing.

– Interestingly, the paper vouchers has recorded an increase to Rs 1.84 billion in September 2013 from Rs 1.63 billion in August 2013 although the volume of transactions has remained constant during these two months. However, this is a decrease from Rs 2.02 billion recorded during July 2013.
