Besides the new iPad Air and iPad Mini, Apple also refreshed its MacBook Pro lineup, launched Mac Pro and released OS X Mavericks, at a press conference in Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco (US). Here is a quick lowdown on all the OS X related announcements:
Free OS X Mavericks Update: After previewing OS X 10.9 ‘Mavericks’ in WWDC 2013 earlier this year, Apple has released the latest OS X update on the Mac App Store. What’s interesting though is that unlike previous years, Apple is offering OS X Mavericks as a free update on the Mac App store for all users running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and above. The previous version OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion was priced at $19.99 while OS X 10.7 Lion was priced at $29.99. (More on OS X Mavericks features here)
New Retina MacBook Pro Lineup: Apple has refreshed its current Retina MacBook Pro Lineup by launching updated versions of the 13-inch and 15-inch notebooks. The company had earlier refreshed its MacBook Air lineup in June 2013.
The new 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro is thinner and lighter than its predecessors, with 0.71-inches thickness and 3.46 pounds weight. It runs on fourth generation Intel Haswell processor, 4GB RAM, support for Thunderbolt 2, reported 9 hours of battery life and up to nine hours of iTunes movie playback. The 13-inch notebook will be available in three variants – Rs 99,900 for 2.4 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB RAM and 128GB version, Rs 1,14,900 for the 8GB RAM and 256GB version and Rs 1,34,900 for the 2.6GHz i5 processor, 8GB RAM and 512GB version.
The new 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro runs on Intel Crystalwell processor with Iris Pro graphics, support for 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Thunderbolt 2, reported eight hours of battery life and up to eight hours of iTunes movie playback. The 15-inch notebook will be available in two variants – Rs 1,49,900 for 2.0 GHz i7 processor, 8GB RAM and 256GB version and Rs 1,99,900 for 2.3GHz i7 processor, 16GB RAM and 512GB storage.
Both the notebooks will ship with OS X Mavericks operating system and are shipping today, which essentially means that the notebooks should be available in the Indian stores in the next few weeks, although there is no exact information on its availability.
Mac Pro Desktop: Apple launched its next-gen Mac Pro desktop featuring a new pro desktop architecture and design, next generation Xeon processors, dual AMD Firepro processors, Thunderbolt 2, four USB 3 ports, six Thunderbolt ports and support for 4K displays.
The desktop is expected to ship in December 2013 and will be available in two different variants – Rs 2,29,900 for 3.7 GHz quad-core Intel Xeon E5 processor, 12GB RAM and 256GB version and Rs 2,99,900 for 3.5 GHz 6-core Intel Xeon E5 processor, 16GB RAM and 256GB flash storage.
15-inch MacBook Pro Discontinued: Following the launch of the new MacBook lineup, Apple seems to have killed the 15-inch MacBook Pro with optical drives, as pointed out by The Verge. It however notes that the 13-inch MacBook Pro variant is still available on Apple’s Online Store starting at $1,199 and is currently the sole Mac with optical drives.
Apple to offer Last Compatible Version of Mac Apps for older machines: After allowing users to download the last compatible version of iOS apps for their older hardware last month, Apple seems to be rolling out a similar feature to the Mac App Store, allowing users to download older versions of apps that may not be compatible with OS X Mavericks.
