Opera SAMW March 2013: Samsung, Google Tops; Users Use More Data On Facebook

Around 19% of total Opera Mini users in India use the browser on smartphones, registering a 136.6% growth year-on-year (YoY) and around 12% of total Opera Mini users in India use its Android app, a 62% increase YoY, according to the company’s State of the Android Mobile Web report.

The company however has not disclosed any specific numbers of either Opera Mini for Android users in India or the total Opera Mini users in the country. As of February 2013, Opera Mini had 207 million unique users globally and India was the largest market for Opera Mini, as of June 2012.

Top Domains accessed by Opera Mini on Android users in India:

Opera said that Facebook accounted for 21.7% of all data used by Opera Mini’s Android users, followed by Google which accounted for 5.8% of the data used and ESPNCricinfo which accounted for 1.7% of the data used. Opera also added that Facebook accounted for the most number of pageviews as well, however it didn’t disclose any specific number.

Opera informed that about 50% of the top hundred domains visited by Opera Mini’s Android users were either related to news, information, search, price comparison or e-commerce related sites.

Category wise, the top 5 e-commerce websites were Quikr, Flipkart, Sulekha, Snapdeal and Olx.in; the top 5 news websites were Indiatimes.com, In.com, Rediff.com, NDTV, and Times Of India.

The top 5 download sites were peperonity.com, mobile9.com, exbii.com, santabanta.com and wap.in while the top 5 travel related sites were Indianrail.gov.in, IRCTC.co.in, Indiarailinfo.com, Trainenquiry.com, and MakeMyTrip.

– Samsung Galaxy Y Duos (GT-S6102)
– Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830i
– Samsung Galaxy Y Duos Lite (GT-S5302)
– Samsung Galaxy Pop GT-S5570
– Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos (GT-S6802)
– Samsung Galaxy Ace (GT-S5830)
– HTC Explorer A310e
– Samsung Galaxy Fit GT-S5670
– Samsung Galaxy S2 (GT-I9100)

What’s particularly interesting is that 9 out of the top 10 Android handsets are from Samsung. Samsung also takes up 31% market share on Opera Mini on Android users in India, followed by Sony at 23% and Micromax at 15%. Another interesting point to note is that 9 out of the top 10 Android devices are sub-Rs 10,000 phones, confirming the fact that India is mostly a low end smartphone handset market.

Its also worth noting that while Micromax has seen significant success in the country with its Canvas handset series, none of Micromax handsets feature in the top 10 categories.

Age and Gender Segment: Opera claimed that 94% of Opera Mini Android users in India are male, indicating that male users still dominate when it comes to surfing their devices. It also claimed that 65% of the Opera Mini users fall in the age group of 18-24 years, while 20% of the Opera Mini users fall under the 25-34 years of age group.
