India Against Spam is an Android app which allows users to report spam text messages and calls to TRAI in a single click. The app is currently available on Google Play Store as a free download and is compatible with all Android devices running on Android 2.1 or later. This was first reported by My Portable World.
Why this is particularly interesting is that while the facility to lodge complaints against unsolicited commercial communication to TRAI has been present for a while, the prescribed message format to lodge a complaint has been quite complicated until now.
Users have to send an SMS to 1909 in the following format “COMP TEL NO XXXXXXXXXX; dd/mm/yy; Time in hh:mm; short description of Unsolicited Commercial Communication” where XXXXXXXXXX is the phone number or header of the SMS, from which the unsolicited commercial communication originated, for each such unsolicited communication.
Earlier in the month, TRAI made the process a little easier by allowing users to simply forward the spam SMS to 1909 after appending the telephone number and date of receipt of the SMS but it can still be a bit complicated for regular users. On the other hand, this app allows users to lodge a complaint in a single click.
How It Works? We tried the app on a Galaxy Nexus running on Android 4.2 and found it to be quite simple to use. After opening the app, it automatically lists all the recent SMS and calls we had received in the past three days. But what’s interesting is that the app looked at the contact data present in our phonebook and listed only unsolicited SMS and calls.
Following this, one can tap on any message or phone number against which he intends to lodge a complaint. This opens up a text box which has already been populated with relevant data in the format stated above and allows one to send the SMS to 1909. We observed that the app also allows users to edit the text message (if needed) or add additional data like the company name in case of unsolicited phone calls.
We noticed that the app also allows one to register or deregister their phone number from any specific category or all categories under the Do Not Disturb service. Besides this, it also allows one to save the outgoing message in the sent folder or automatically delete the SMS or the phone number after lodging the complaint. It also provides a counter listing the number of complaints registered till now.
Why Hasn’t This Been Done Before? Frankly, this is a feature one would’ve expected to be present in all spam blocking apps. We believe this approach of allowing users to lodge complaints against unsolicited commercial communications is better than hiding the SMSs or calls locally, since it solves (or at least tries to solve) the primary problem of receiving such spam messages or calls in the first place.
