As Apple launched its new products yesterday, its new iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max mark a succession in the number of cameras that Apple has loaded on to its devices. It also launched iPad 7th generation and Apple Watch Series 5 at its keynote address on September 10 at the Steve Jobs Theater in its Californian headquarters. Two new services, Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade, also made their debut.
While the world was speculating if Apple would raise prices to combat the 15% increase in tariffs on products made in China, the company surprised everyone as it launched iPhone 11 at $50 lower than iPhone XR. It also lowered the prices of its popular iPhone XR, iPhone 8 and Apple Watch Series 3.
That’s all good. When can I buy them? All phones will be available for pre-order on September 13, 5 am PT in the US and will arrive in stores on September 20.
What about India? We will have to wait a bit longer. In India, phones will be available from September 27.
Oh drat! What about the prices? iPhone 11 starts at ₹64,900 in India and $699 in the US. iPhone 11 Pro will start at ₹99,900 in India ($999+ in US) while iPhone 11 Pro Max will start at ₹1,09,900 in India ($1,099+ in US).
That’s steep for India. I heard something about fidget-spinner cameras? Tell me more. So the Pro version have a tri-camera setup that, you guessed it, resemble a fidget spinner. The three cameras are: ultra wide camera, wide camera, and telephoto camera. They will allow you to record multiple videos at once.
What about the iPhone 11? That has 2 cameras: the wide camera, and the ultra wide.
I saw #slofies trend. What are those? You can now record slo-mo videos on the front-facing cameras of the new iPhones. Slo-mo + selfie = slofie
Give me a quick lowdown of their features: Here you go:
iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max (64 GB, 256 GB, 521 GB): iOS 13, A13 bionic processor, available in 4 colours, Super Retina XDR OLED display, tri-camera setup, 12 MP front-facing camera, camera night mode, 4K video recording for both front and rear cameras, longer battery life (Pro has 1 more hour of battery life than iPhone XS and Pro Max has 2 more hours than iPhone XS Max), #slofies
iPhone 11 (64 GB, 128 GB, 256 GB): iOS 13, A13 bionic processor, available in 6 colours, ultra-wide camera lens, camera night mode, 2X optical zoom, 12 MP front-facing camera (up from 7MP), 4K video recording for both front and rear cameras, longer battery life (an hour more than iPhone XR), #slofies
When will I get an iOS 13 on my old phone? September 19.
Was a new iPad also announced? Yes! The 7th generation iPad will be available at ₹29,900 in India and at $329 in the US, same price as the iPad 6th generation. In US it will be available from September 30, but an Indian release date is not yet available. It has a 10.2 inch screen with an A10 Fusion connector chip. And finally, you will be able to connect your pen drives to an iPad using a small connector.
Will it have the new iPadOS? Yes!
What about Apple Watch? Apple released Apple Watch Series 5 which has an 18-hour battery life and an always on display.
How much does it cost? GPS models: ₹40,900 ($399+ in US); Cellular models: ₹49,900 ($499+ in US)
When will it be available? In India, on September 27, and a week earlier in the US, on September 20.
Will the Apple Watch also get a new OS? Good that you asked. WatchOS 6 will be released on September 19 and will have a Noise app to control volume intuitively, and a menstrual cycle tracking app.
What about services? Apple announced two new subscription-based services: Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade.
Tell me about Apple TV+. It launches on November 1 in over 100 countries, including India. It’s a family subscription for up to 6 members.
Is it expensive? Surprisingly, no. In India, it will cost ₹99/month, with 7-day free trial, significantly cheaper than Netflix, and pretty cheap for Apple, too. In US, it will cost $4.99/month, but they get a month long free trial.
Oh! Any freebies? If you purchase a new iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac or Apple TV, you get Apple TV+ FREE for a year. Yes, you read it right, Apple is giving something for free.
What about Apple Arcade? That’s a subscription-based gaming service for up to 5 family members that will give you access to 100+ games. It will be launched on September 19 in 115 countries, including India.
Pricing structure, please. In India, ₹99/month, and $4.99/month in the US.
Any freebies with this too? Unfortunately, no. But there is a free month-long trial, which is available in India as well.
Anything that surprised you? It’s strange that Apple retained lightning connector in the new iPhones and the new iPad, given that it had migrated to USB-C ports in new MacBook and iPad Pro for greater interoperability. And the prices. They weren’t outlandish, even by Apple standards. In fact, the subscription fees are on the lower spectrum in the industry, a first for Apple.
