Major streaming companies continue to keep up with the grievance disclosure requirements laid down under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, even as uncertainty looms over their legal validity. Why it matters: The continued compliance with the IT Rules, 2021, despite a stay on their implementation as the country’s apex court deliberates upon the matter, suggests that the companies are in no mood to run afoul of the Indian government. The disclosures are of keen interest because they provide insights into whether the redressal mechanism is able to address issues in a comprehensive fashion, and offer timely resolution of complaints. Netflix: As many as 14 grievances were received by Netflix in September 2022 according to the report published by the company. The platform said that it addressed ten of these complaints whereas four of them are pending disposal, the report added. The platform revealed that four grievances were related to the Code of Ethics and seven of them did not concern the code.
