Vodafone Idea net loss at ₹25,460 crore, ARPU slips by 5.8% QoQ to ₹114


Vodafone Idea lost 11.3 million subscribers in the first quarter of financial year 2020–21, and had a net loss of ₹25,460 crores, as it made provisions to pay the AGR dues.

  • Revenue stood at ₹10,659.3 crore, down 9.3% QoQ, and down 5.4% YoY.
    • Airtel revenues for the same quarter stood at ₹24,419.2 crore (down 0.9% QoQ, up 16.1% YoY).
    • Jio revenues for the same quarter stood at ₹19,513 crore, up 4.7% QoQ and 33.7% YoY.
  • ARPU for the quarter declined 5.8% to ₹114 from ₹121 in the previous quarter, but up from ₹108 YoY (largely due to the tariff hike in FY20).
    • Airtel ARPU stood at ₹157, up 1.95% QoQ and 21.7% YoY.
    • Jio ARPU stood at ₹140.3, up 8.4% from ₹130.6 QoQ, and 15.2% YoY.
  • Data over the network stood at 4,523 petabytes in the quarter, up 10.6% QoQ and 40.4% YoY.
    • Data over Airtel’s network stood at 7,239 petabytes in the quarter, up 12.2% QoQ and 72.7% YoY.
    • Jio’s data traffic stood at 14,200 petabytes, up 10.6% QoQ.
  • 4G subscriber base stood at 104.6 million, down 0.95% QoQ and up 23.35% YoY.
    • Airtel data subscriber base stood at 148.57 million, up 0.34% QoQ and up 24.2% YoY.
    • Jio subscriber base was 398.3 million, up 20.2% YoY and 2.6% QoQ.
  • Data usage per 4G subscriber stood at 13GB per month, up 10.6% QoQ and 15.2% YoY.
    • Airtel monthly usage per user increased in Q1 from 15GB to 16.3GB.
    • Jio usage was at 12.1GB per user, up 6.14% YoY, and 7% QoQ.
  • Average minutes of calls per user per month stood at 678 minutes, down by 10 minutes QoQ and 12 minutes YoY.
    • Airtel voice usage stood at 994 minutes, a 3% increase QoQ, and a 11.9% increase YoY.
    • Jio voice usage was at 977 minutes, up 13% QoQ.

Other financial highlights

  • Net loss stood at ₹25,460 crore, up 118.7% QoQ and 422.4% YoY
  • EBITDA stood at ₹4,098.4 crore, down 6.4% QoQ and up 12.3% YoY
  • EBITDA margin stood at 38.4%, compared to 37.3% in the previous quarter, and 32.4% in the same quarter the previous year.
