Mobile Number Portability reduced 8.8% in May 2019: TRAI

Porting requests were submitted for 4.17 million connections in the month of May 2019, according to the data released by the TRAI. This is down 8.8% from 4.57 million porting requests reported in April 2019.

For May, the maximum number of requests in Zone-I (North and West India) were received from Maharashtra at 0.44 million, followed by Gujarat at 0.31 million, and Delhi at 0.25 million. On the flip side, the least number of requests were received from Jammu & Kashmir, which has one of the lowest user bases among all states in the country, at only 20,000 requests. Note that the TRAI does not provide an operator-wise breakdown for these mobile number porting requests.

In Zone-II (South and East India), the maximum number of requests were received from Andhra Pradesh, with 0.31 million porting requests, followed by Karnataka at 0.30 million and Madhya Pradesh with 0.28 million requests. The North East circle saw only 10,000 porting requests for the month.

Note that in November 2017, the TRAI reduced the per port transaction charge for each successful Mobile Number Portability from Rs 19 to Rs 4. The TRAI had capped the porting charge at Rs 19 in 2009, and operators were free to charge any amount less than this if they chose to.
