Global technology industry trade group ITI (Information Technology Industry) Council has appointed Kumardeep Banerjee as its country manager for India. Based in New Delhi, he will lead the group's engagement with the Indian government. Banerjee told MediaNama that his primary task would be to "expand ITI’s global role, be a voice for the India's tech sector, and champion the causes of the industry”. He will advance ITI's perspective in policy debates, engage with the government, and evolve a framework for existing and upcoming technology policy. On India’s draft data protection bill, he said that ITI was looking forward to a policy that benefits the Indian economy, but refused to comment on whether the bill, in its current form, would indeed ensure growth. He said ITI has provided its comments on the data bill and has made enough public submissions regarding aspects of data and data localisation at various forums, including the consultative processes that were initiated by various government departments. According to Banerjee’s LinkedIn profile, he has previously worked with Vodafone India and several prominent news outlets in India, including Bloomberg, Aaj Tak and Zee Media.
