Industry moves roundup: Paytm, PayU, Uber, Oyo and more

Industry moves in January 2019

PayU India CEO Amrish Rau will now head financial technology partnerships and investments at PayU’s South Africa based parent company Naspers, reported the Economic Times. Rau will look for fresh acquisitions for Naspers, and will report to PayU CEO Laurent le Moal. Rau has previously worked at payment companies like Firstdata, NCR Corporation, and later started Citrus Payments in Mumbai.

  • PayU India will appoint a new CEO soon per the report.
  • Shailaz Nag will head PayU India’s offline business, and enable BharatQR for offline merchants
  • PayU India MD Jitendra Gupta will head LazyPay
  • Chief business officer Rahul Kothari will head the company’s enterprise business

Netflix has hired Arushi Maheshwari from BookMyShow’s senior communications team to head its communications team, reports Exchange4Media. Maheshwari was with BookMyShow for almost 3 years, and also worked with the communications and PR team at Airtel for 4 years prior to that.

Uber India has appointed Pavan Vaish as the head of central operations, reported the Economic Times. Vaish was the CEO of Daksh E-services, which was acquired by IBM, and he co-founded Quadrant Infotech.

Pallav Singh, long-time senior VP and interim COO at Ola, has quit the company earlier this month, reported the Economic Times. ET said that the company did not comment on Singh’s departure or on his replacement. Singh had been serving as COO ever since Vishal Kaul left the company in May 2018. In fact, Singh has been interim CFO at an earlier occasion in February 2017, after Rajiv Bansal stepped down from the role.

Flipkart has promoted its fashion department head Rishi Vasudev to head fashion & lifestyle at Myntra-Jabong, reported the Economic Times. Vasudev was promoted to senior VP earlier this month, and is a former CEO of Calvin Klein in India.

According to reports, Jabong was merged with Myntra two months ago, and 150-200 Jabong staff was laid off. After Ananth Narayanan’s eventual departure earlier this month, Amar Nagaram was named the new chief of Myntra-Jabong. According to ET, both Nagaram and Vasudev will report to Flipkart CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy .

Trivago’s Abhinav Kumar (who you see in many Trivago ads) has simultaneously joined P2P lending platform Paisadukan as a digital marketing and branding advisor, and also the company’s advisory board. This was reported by the Economic Times. Paisadukan has appointed two others, Uttam Prakash Agarwal and V Balakrishnan, on its board prior to this.

Times Network has appointed Amitabh Biswas as head of marketing for its English entertainment cluster, the company said in a statement. Biswas will lead brand and media strategy for Times Network’s English entertainment channels like Movies Now, Romedy Now, etc, and report to executive VP and head of entertainment cluster Vivek Srivastava. Biswas has previously been with Times Network’s news channels, Reliance Infocom, Star News, Bloomberg UTV, among others.

Oyo has appointed Sam Shih as COO for China operations. Shih was president of Global Consumables and CEO of Asia Pulp & Paper Co. Prior to that, he was with PepsiCo for over 20 years serving senior roles in the company’s China unit.

Paytm has rejigged its top and mid-level leaders, reportedly, because it is shifting focus to B2B and offline-to-online consumer business, per the Economic Times:

    • Paytm Payments Bank CFO Sudhandhu Jain is now the financial comptroller
    • Bharti Balakrishnan, senior director with Alibaba, was appointed to lead fashion and home & kitchen
  • Varun Gupta was promoted to head groceries
  • Srinivas Mothey is now the Paytm marketing chief

Senior VPs Amit Bagaria and Saurabh Vasishtha have quit Paytm Mall.
