Exclusive: RBI issues in-principle licenses to 5 Account Aggregators

In September 2016, RBI announced master directions for a new class of non banking finance companies called Account Aggregators (NBFC-AA). These entities will enable sharing of data from across various financial sector institutions, and act as “consent brokers”, that is, mediate data transfers across financial entities with the user’s consent. RBI had conceptualized this around July 2015. Read it here

MobiKwik pulls back on retail biz; layoffs and Chennai office closed

MobiKwik has shut down two of its offices in India, laid off several employees, and scaled back its retail business, sources have told MediaNama. A current employee said that upto 200 employees and contractors have been asked to leave in all. Read it here

Delhi HC gives UIDAI a 4 week extension in damages due to the Aadhaar data breach case

The Delhi High Court has granted UIDAI 4 weeks’ time to file a response to a plea seeking damages for the losses due to an Aadhaar data leak, reports PTI. A two judge bench of Justice Ravindra Bhat and Prateek Jalan has listed the matter for hearing on February 14, 2019. Read it here

MobiKwik launches an insurance product; targets 1.5M policies

MobiKwik has launched accidental insurance on its mobile website and app, and plans to introduce general and life insurance products. The company will partner with insurance companies to launch more schemes, but did not mention a timeline for this. MobiKwik co-founder and CEO Upasana Taku said that it was targeting getting 1.5 million policies by the end of FY 2019. Read it here

Reliance launches VoLTE international roaming

Reliance Jio has launched VoLTE (Voice Over Long Term Evolution) based inbound international roaming between India and Japan. Japan’s KDDI, will utilise Jio’s VoLTE based international roaming services in India. Read it here

Honeywell launches drone inspections and data analytics for the industrial market

Honeywell has launched its commercial Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Inspection and Data Analytics services in India. Primarily targeted at the utilities and oil and gas companies, these services will be useful for ‘eliminating many of the risks associated with dangerous structural examinations,’ the company said in a statement. SC asks MLA Moitra to provide evidence of social media surveillance by UIDAI

The Supreme Court of India gave two weeks notice to Trinamool Congress MLA Mahua Moitra to substantiate her claim of social media surveillance by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), reports The Indian Express. Read it here
