Airtel has appointed Adarsh Nair as chief product officer, he will be responsible for the digital products and platforms, reports The Hindu Business Line. Nair will report directly to managing director and CEO (India & South Asia) Gopal Vittal. Airtel confirmed the appointment to MediaNama.
According to ET, the chief product officer role has been vacant since three years ago, when Anand Chandrashekar held the role.
Nair has joined Airtel from Convoy Inc., where he was vice president of product and headed growth. Convoy is a US-based e-commerce platform which provides shipping services. He has also been with Marchex, and Microsoft as group product manager. He was a senior consultant at McKinsey for about 18 months.
Recent moves at Airtel
- In May, Airtel appointed Anubrata Biswas as CEO and MD of Airtel Payments Bank, which was the first payments bank in the country. Biswas filled the position which had been lying vacant for a few months after Shashi Arora resigned over issues around the UIDAI suspending the payments bank’s e-KYC license.
- Just a month prior to this, Airtel brought onboard former NASA executive Santanu Bhattacharya as chief data scientist to work on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and IoT.
Airtel: net profit and customer base
In its last quarterly earnings call for Q2, Airtel reported a 65% lower year-over-year net profit of Rs 119 crore, a fall from Rs 343 crore. Falling net profit has been a trend at the company in the past year. Airtel’s global customers increased by 14% YoY to 444.9 million customers, 329 million of these customers are customers in India.
