UIDAI asks telcos for plan to stop using Aadhaar authentication

The UIDAI has asked telecom companies to submit a plan to stop using Aadhaar for authentication within the next 15 days, reports Business Standard. According to the report, circulars have been issued to major telecom service providers including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, Reliance Jio and others.

UIDAI CEO Ajay Bhushan Pandey said that the telecom companies are in the best position to know what exactly is required to stop Aadhaar usage. The UIDAI will tell telcos of any additional requirements after it receives the exit plans from the telcos.

The Supreme Court, last week, struck down Section 57 of the Aadhaar Act, 2016, which allowed private companies to use Aadhaar authentication.
