Network18 reports 28% decline in revenues from “Digital, Print & Others”; VOOT, HS18, BookMyShow

Network18 reported total consolidated operating revenues of Rs 1237 crores for the quarter ending September 2018 (Q2FY19), 9% higher than the Rs 1138 crores last year, and an improvement over Rs 1094 crores in the preceding quarter. Read it here

Hic-cups in Maharashtra’s online liquor delivery: To deliver or not to deliver?

This may be the world’s smallest ‘cheers’ altogether: In less than 24 hours after TOI reported Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Minister for Maharashtra state excise, as saying that the Maharashtra government was in the “last stage of finalising” an online liquor delivery policy, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis told another TOI reporter that “No such decision has been taken and neither will it be taken.” Read it here

Foodpanda acquires defunct cloud kitchen HolaChef

Foodpanda has acquired Mumbai-based cloud kitchen HolaChef, nearly six months after the latter shuttered its operations. Ola had been in advanced talks to acquire HolaChef since August, per Mint. With this acquisition, Foodpanda plans to launch its own brand of food products. Read it here

Zomato gets 21M food delivery orders every month: Deepinder Goyal

Zomato said that it is now doing 21 million monthly food orders in India, Deepinder Goyal, Zomato’s co-founder and CEO said in a blog post in the first week of October. It is also getting an additional 2 million orders over the phone, which Goyal discounted off of the monthly number. Read it here

Pune Ola driver files FIR against Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal; MNS Pune threatens violence

Dynaneshwar Ram Salgare, an Ola driver from Pune, along with the political party Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (Pune) (MNS), has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Ola co-founder and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal, (Ola Leasing Company – sic), and Ola Fleet Technologies Limited (OFT) under the following Sections of the IPC: 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention). Yatra launches hourly hotel bookings Flexi Stay

Yatra has launched an hourly hotel booking service called ‘Flexi Stay’ on select hotels. Customers can choose a check-in time and date while booking the hotel, but they have to book and pay for the room for a minimum of 4 hours. Launched in September, and live on the Yatra Android app, the service is available in New Delhi & Bangalore and the pilgrimage/temple towns of Shirdi and Tirupati. Read it here

Samsung acquires Zhilabs for 5G capabilities

Samsung Electronics has acquired Zhilabs, a network and service analytics company, to pad its 5G capabilities. Zhilabs will operate independently, while Samsung will also create new technology with it. Read it here

Netflix: We are just getting started in India; Q3FY2019 earnings

Netflix shares soared 15% after reporting its Q3FY2019 earnings and recording 130 million paid subscribers and 7 million on free trial. The company added 998,000 paid memberships in the US, and 5 million in the international market this quarter. Revenues from the domestic and international markets fell in the same ballpark. Streaming revenue grew 36% from the same quarter last year. Read it here

The Reserve Bank of India has finally issued guidelines for interoperability of wallets, one year, eight months and seven days after the deadline of February 9th 2017 set by the Watal Committee for this task lapsed. Read it here

Viraj Chouhan quits Ola as communications head, Anand Subramanian to take over

Ola’s communications head Viraj Chouhan has left the company, less than a year after he joined. Chouhan will join PepsiCo India as its chief communications officer from 1 November. Chouhan joined Ola in December 2017 from MTS India, where he was the director of corporate communications. He has also been with Coca-Cola as head of communications and public affairs for India and South Asia. Read it here
