Hathway has launched a set top box with Android TV. This makes Hathway the fifth large television distributor to sell an Android-enabled set top box, after Airtel, Videocon, Tata Sky, and Jio. Interestingly, this announcement comes amid an Economic Times report that Hathway was in talks to be acquired by Jio to speed up the rollout of JioGigaFiber. (“The Company evaluates various opportunities on an ongoing basis,” Reliance told the Bombay Stock Exchange, declining to comment on whether the report is true.)

The Android TV cable box will come with a remote that has a Netflix, YouTube and Google Play shortcut buttons. This essentially makes the set top box similar to a streaming stick with TV access.

Hathway’s recent developments

  • Hathway announced a carrier billing deal with Netflix in September.
  • The company lost ~30,000 broadband subscribers in Q1 FY19.
  • When Reliance announced JioGigaFiber in July, Hathway’s shares, along with those of other TV operators, crashed.
