Exclusive: Apple opposes access to phone logs for TRAI’s spam reporting app

In a regulatory submission, obtained by MediaNama under RTI, Apple has opposed a provision in TRAI’s SMS Spam regulation which would force handset makers to give blanket permissions to TRAI’s DND 2.0 spam-reporting app. This provision had raised fears that Apple’s iPhones would effectively be banned in India if it did not cave in to TRAI’s demands. Google claims responsibility for UIDAI number ‘inadvertently’ being on Android phones by default

Over the weekend, it emerged that an old number used by the Aadhaar-issuing Unique Identification Authority of India for a helpline, 1800-300-1947, was mysteriously present on all Android phones in the country. Read it here

DoT to form Net Neutrality committee with an advisory role

The Department of Telecommunications will soon be forming a committee (circular from 31 July, available yesterday) to advise the government on issues of monitoring compliance with Net Neutrality. The committee will have an advisory role, and its membership will be decided in consultation with the TRAI. Read it here

Draft National E-commerce Policy: data localisation and priority to domestic companies

Govt to put out new e-commerce policy draft for public consultation in next ten days

The government will officially release a new version of its controversial e-commerce policy draft for public comments in the next ten days. Sudhanshu Pandey, a Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Commerce, announced the move at a roundtable in Delhi held by the Confederation of All India Traders, an industry body. Read it here

Apple says it respects privacy, Siri doesn’t ‘listen’ to users in response to US Congress

Apple Inc told U.S. lawmakers on Tuesday that its iPhones do not listen to users without their consent and do not allow third-party apps to do so either, after lawmakers asked in July the company if its devices were invading users’ privacy. Read it here

Govt blocked over 18 webpages every day on average since 2016; 11,045 so far

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has blocked 11,045 URLs on the Indian internet since January 2016, MeitY revealed in a parliamentary response. That’s an average of over 18 webpages every day. The response was first reported by Telecom Talk. Read it here

Internet shutdown proposed in run up to Dalit protests in Rajasthan; shutdowns challenged in High Court

Even as the Rajasthan High Court issues notice (pdf) to the state government in a case challenging internet shutdowns, the state government has imposed Sec 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in Gwalior; another district, Bhind, is considering shutting the internet down in the run up to Dalit protests scheduled on Thursday.
