Zomato appoints Mohit Gupta as CEO of Food Delivery

Mohit Gupta, who was formerly at MakeMyTrip as the Chief Operating Officer – Online, has joined Zomato as the CEO of the food delivery business at Zomato.

Mohit has about 20 years of experience. He joined MakeMyTrip in 2008, and worked in several senior positions in the company. As the COO – Online, MakeMyTrip Ltd, Mohit was responsible for the P&L of online business, the overall business strategy of MakeMyTrip brand, product and technology roadmap and overall growth. In between, he also worked with e-commerce website like Zovi.com for one year. Besides, he also worked with PepsiCo for about seven years. He holds an MBA degree from Indian Institue of Management (IIM)  Calcutta, and has studied mechanical engineering from Sardar Patel University.

Zomato launched its online ordering and food delivery services in May 2015 and currently delivers over 10.5 Million orders a month. The food delivery service is currently available across 17 cities in India, i.e. Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Kochi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Indore, Coimbatore, Vadodara, Nagpur, Lucknow and Ludhiana. Zomato said food ordering brought in nearly 30% of Zomato’s revenue in FY18, with the share increasing from close to 18% in FY17. In March 2018, food delivery in India grew by 48% in terms of order volume over the previous month and revenue-wise by 55%. In terms of usage, the company said it had nearly 5.5 million monthly food orders in March 2018.

Exits in Zomato

Note that besides new hiring, Zomato also saw exits of senior-level executives in recent past, as the company is locking horns with Swiggy in food delivery space. In June, company’s chief business officer Mukund Kulashekaran quit the company within less than five months after taking on the role of CBO from his earlier stint as global business head of online ordering. He was in that position since the launch of Zomato’s online delivery services in 2015.

Before that,  about ten senior-level and mid-level executives left Zomato this year, including from the operations team in Australia and the UAE, and the global growth team in India. Only three months ago, the company’s co-founder Pankaj Chadda quit after spending 10 years there.
