Indian Railways will now accept Aadhaar or driving license from DigiLocker as ID proof

The Indian Railways will now accept digital Aadhaar & Driving License from DigiLocker as valid ID proofs. The official notification from the Railways Ministry states that a passenger travelling on a train can show the digital Aadhaar or Driving License on their Issues Documents on the DigiLocker app. The notice clarifies that documents uploaded by the user themselves will not be considered as valid IDs. Digilocker is an Aadhaar-based cloud-based locker in which users can store electronic versions of important documents like birth certificates, voters ID cards, University documents, PAN cards, and more. Initially, E-documents are shared through a registered repository, which ensures that the documents are authentic. It was launched by the Department of Electronics & Information Technology (DeitY) in 2015. It expanded gradually enabling users to access Driving licenses, registration cards, insurance details and other vehicle-related documents. All these documents can be issued and saved digitally on the DigiLocker. Number of issuers: Currently DigiLocker has 54 registered issuers including the UIDAI, Income Tax Department, Ministry of Road Transport, Central Board of Secondary Education, National e-Governance Division, Department of Registration & Stamps, Maharashtra, among others. It also claims to have over 12 million registered users. Type of documents: The most uploaded document is the Aadhaar card, which is required for signing up on the platform in the first place. Other than this, DigiLocker is also used to issue PAN cards, Driving License, caste and birth certificates education and income certificates, possession certificate and nativity certificate, among others.
