Video streaming giant Netflix has roped-in Srishti Behl as Director, International Originals, Netflix India, to build its original content portfolio in India, the company confirmed to MediaNama. The development was first reported by Indiatelevision.com. Based in Mumbai, Behl is part of the Netflix India International Originals team and reports to the person who manages that team, Netflix’s spokesperson told to MediaNama. Behl worked in the Indian film industry where has co-produced a couple of Bollywood films.
India is one of Netflix’s few mobile-first markets, where more users use the service on a smartphone primarily. Buoyed by Reliance Jio, the company has said, streaming and subscriber growth has gone up significantly. The company has announced a few original series in the recent past. These originals include Leila, Ghoul, Crocodile, Sacred Games, starring Saif Ali Khan, Radhika Apte and Nawazuddin Siddiqui; Selection Day, Again, and Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment-produced Bard of Blood, Ronnie Screwvala-produced film called Love Per Square Foot, starring Angira Dhar, Ratna Pathak, and Vicky Kaushal.
Note that Netflix has been adding most of its new subscriber from outside of US in the Q1 2018 with over 5.46 million net subscriber additions compared to 1.96 million subscribers additions in the US. Netflix recorded global net additions of 7.41 million, up 50% from the same period last year. Netflix’s international segment now accounts for 50% of revenue and 55% of memberships.
