Jio extends Prime membership for current users by a year

Reliance Jio has extended complimentary benefits in its Prime membership for another year, with no additional costs. Users who are Prime members will not have to renew the membership with an annual payment. They will just have to allow the extension through MyJio app. Those who wish to sign up for Prime, however, will have to pay an annual fee of Rs 99. Earlier, these benefits were to end by March 31, 2018. Jio claims to have 175 million Prime users country-wide.

The telco offers discounts on mobile recharge and data costs to its Prime users, along with a bouquet of services such as  access to a digital content library, and exclusive sporting content for Jio users on the JioTV streaming app. The Live TV app acquired exclusive India digital rights for the T20 cricket series Nidahas Trophy in March. It also streamed the Winter Olympics 2018 and the Carabao Cup for football.

In March, Jio began offering 10 GB data to users specifically for streaming on its JioTV app every month, in addition to their usual data plan. JioTV app has 583 channels, including 39 HD channels, in several Indian languages. Jio lists access to best deals and innovations as other features of the Prime membership and its other apps include Jio Music and Jio News.

Such offers and benefits add to the telecom price war, which began in 2016 after Jio’s entry in the market. The company has consistently offered low to negligible tariff rates, pulling customers from over service providers. Other telcos responded with similar offers to keep their users, and the telecom industry is now financially distressed. The competition has also extended from primary services to over-the-top ones, which Jio Prime members also get.
