On the Narendra Modi app and the Clevertap controversy

Security researcher Robert Baptiste, who goes by the pseudonym Elliot Alderson on Twitter, has alleged that that PM Narendra Modi’s application, the “Narendra Modi” application, was collecting the following details about people who downloaded it: email, photo, name, gender, photo, education, device ID, date of birth, phone number, language preferences, profession, city, carrier, among other fields such as (what appear to be interests or the willingness to receive alerts about the PM), video preferences etc. Read it here

BloombergQuint’s Whatsapp broadcasting service has 100,000 subscribers

Multimedia news portal BloombergQuint’s Whatsapp broadcasting service has reached 100,000 subscribers the publisher has said in a statement. Launched in November 2017, the free service allows users to sign up and receive news snippets, market highlights and other content from the publisher as messages on Whatsapp intermittently through the day. The chatbot-style service also allows users to check for real-time stock prices and use hashtag-based search for trending news categories. Read it here

Flipkart payments infuses Rs 518 crore into PhonePe

Flipkart-owned digital payments company PhonePe has received Rs 518 crore of fund infusion from Flipkart Payments, a Singapore-based subsidiary of the e-commerce giant. The investment is part of the $500 million commitment Flipkart made to invest in PhonePe last year. Read it here

Aadhaar CrAPPs – unofficial Aadhaar apps that serve little purpose beyond getting your data

There are many ad funded “free” unofficial apps on the Google Playstore that provide basic services related with Aadhaar that are of little use, yet the Aadhaar number being the sensitive information that it is, the apps have the potential to fool ignorant users into providing sensitive information about themselves to unknown and untrusted third parties. WhatsApp adds QR support for for its UPI based payments service

WhatsApp has rolled out support for QR based payments on the latest beta version of its Android app. A month and a half after it’s launch, the messaging app seems to be making an effort to fix its UPI based payments service’s woeful interoperability (a key selling point for UPI). Read it here

Whistleblower names Congress as Cambridge Analytica client in India

Christopher Wylie, the former Cambridge Analytica (CA) employee who unveiled the consulting firm’s misuse of Facebook data, said that the firm has worked extensively in India and the Congress party has been one of its clients. Summary: Digital Information Security in Healthcare Act (DISHA) to enable electronic health records

DISHA (Digital Information Security in Healthcare Act) will enable the digital sharing of personal health records with hospitals and clinics, and between hospitals and clinics; it will be the basis for the creation of digital health records in India. As we’ve reported earlier, the National Health Policy has green-lit the creation of a National Health Information Network, for sharing of Aadhaar linked Electronic Health Records.
