Amazon Prime Music inks its first deal with Zee Music in India

Taking a step ahead after hinting the launch of Prime Music in India for months, Amazon has finally announced its first content deal for music with Zee Music Company in the country. However, the e-commerce giant has not shared the exact date of launch for the streaming service. Amazon did not share financial information of the deal.

For users, the new music service will come as a part of Prime membership, with no additional cost. The company also said that Amazon Prime Music will be ad-free. Note that Amazon has a separate app for its music service.

With this deal, Amazon said that Prime Music library in India will have about 450 film soundtracks in Hindi & regional languages like Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Punjabi, Bengali etc, alongside 250 independent artists content along with other Indian and International songs.

Amazon Prime Music largely competes with Times Internet’s Gaana, Saavn, Apple Music, Hungama, Airtel’s Wynk etc.

Also,  Movies and entertainment ticketing platform BookMyShow entered music streaming space and recently upgraded its music service Jukebox with original audio content in multiple languages across categories including horror, sports, Bollywood, news and business, kids, comedy, music, entertainment (story-telling, drama, mystery etc.), history, and mythology & devotion.

In terms of metrics, Gaana crossed 50 million monthly users for the month of November 2017, which is a growth of 25% in two months from 40 million active users in the month of September 2017. Last year, Airtel’s music streaming application Wynk Music said that it crossed 50 million app downloads in March.  Meanwhile, Hungama claimed to have crossed 50 million monthly active users worldwide with 2.5 million pieces of music content and 5000 movies.

MediaNama’s take

Amazon Music may have an edge over its competition, as the Amazon Prime membership comes at Rs 999 per year, which gives access to video streaming, free delivery from Amazon’s e-tail space on select items, and now ad-free music service as well. As compared to this, Saavn comes at a yearly fee of Rs 1050, Times Internet’s Gaana at Rs 1020, Apple Music comes at Rs 1200 per year.  However, players like Saavn and Gaana have begun to focus on originals rather than simply music streaming from movies and albums.
