Saregama’s unexpected hardware success: Carvaan

Music and entertainment company Saregama is basking in the success of Carvaan, a retro-looking portable audio player, which packs in 5000 old Hindi movie songs, and also doubles up as an FM radio. Launched in May this year, the product sold 90,000 units between July and September, and following that unexpected success, Saregama is, conservatively, targeting another 200,000 units in the next six months. 99Acres posts an EBITDA profit in Q2FY18; demand shifts to resale, rentals

99acres, the real estate portal from Info Edge, reported an EBITDA level profit of Rs 40 lakh for the quarter ended September 2017 (Q2FY18). 99acres had posted an EBITDA loss of Rs 13.1 crore in Q2 of last year. Info Edge CEO Hitesh Oberoi said that this was helped by a writeback of Rs 3 crore in the preceding quarter. Read it here

Paytm finally brings UPI transactions on its app

Payments platform Paytm will be introducing UPI transactions on its platform where users can create their virtual payment address (VPA) on the app. The VPA will be issued by Paytm Payments Bank and users can link any savings bank accounts which are on the UPI architecture. Read it here

Amazon infuses Rs 130 crore more in its logistics arm ATS

Amazon India’s logistics arm Amazon Transportation Services (ATS) has further received funding of Rs 130 crore as per the Registrar of Companies documents, reports Financial Express. The capital came in from the US-based parent Amazon Inc. Read it here

PayPal starts payments aggregator business for merchants in India

Global payments company PayPal is starting its domestic India operations as a payments aggregator and will be offering its services to merchants. PayPal has been in India for over 10 years now but its Indian users were only engaged in cross-border payments for businesses selling goods and services abroad. Read it here

Saregama plans to launch a movie every month, targeting online video services

Ownership of IP is turning out a big incentive for producers to switch to online streaming services, and might end up forcing a change in how TV producers work with them.

In its earnings conference call, music and entertainment company Saregama said that they’ll be getting into film production, and the approach is in consonance with their philosophy of owning the intellectual property of the content that they create. Read it here

The Walt Disney Company has named Abhishek Maheshwari as its new Country Head for India, reports Exchange4Media. According to the portal, Maheshwari will now be reporting to Mahesh Samat, Executive Vice President & Managing Director, Walt Disney International, South Asia. Read it here

BHIM accounted for only 10% of UPI transactions in October 2017

The Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) UPI app saw transactions of 7.6 million for the month of October 2017, and transactions worth Rs 2,348.7 crore, actually declining when there was massive growth in UPI payments. Read it here

SBI Buddy registered users grew 11.13% QoQ to 11.92 million

State Bank of India (SBI)’s mobile wallet, SBI Buddy, now has 11.923 million registered wallet users at the end of the June quarter (Q1FY18). The number of wallets grew around 11.12% from 10.73 million in the preceding quarter and grew exponentially from 4.87 million in the same quarter last year. Read it here

JustDial denies that it is in acquisition talks with Google

JustDial has denied that it is in acquisition talks with Internet giant Google following a news report, the company informed stock exchanges. “We would like to clarify that as of now there is no proposal in respect of the acquisition of the business of Just Dial by Google and news published in Business Standard dated 10 November, 2017 is factually incorrect” the company said.
