Journalist for covering social media platforms and media companies

MediaNama is looking for a full-time journalist developments on social media platforms and media companies. The ideal candidate should be passionate about content and affiliated businesses, with an interest in how they intersect with carriage services, such as telecom operators and social media platforms.

The journalist should be based in Delhi or Mumbai, and have the ability to track and analyse developments, on deadline. You will be expected to break news, analyse developments, and prepare weekly and monthly overviews for your segment.

  1. Your Mission: the mission of a media and social media platforms reporter is to develop a reader base around among the media (music, video, news) and affiliated services space by breaking stories, analysing, curating stories specific to recommend related domains, such as delivery of content. The journalist should also track various media organizations in the country. An understanding on how indic language media organizations work and their business models is an advantage.
  2. Your key outcomes:
    1. Monthly reports on your segment, organizing updates
    2. Two key interviews each month from each sub-segment of media/social media.
    3. At least two news stories a working day, specific to media/social media and associated businesses
    4. Break at least 6 stories a month
    5. One editorial Point of view a month
    6. Get at least four columns a month from industry insiders.

 

Journalist for cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI)

MediaNama is looking for a full-time journalist who will cover developments in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI) coming out of India. The candidate should be passionate about the sector with an interest with how they intersect with the larger domain of the Internet and society. The journalist should ideally be based in Bangalore and must have the ability to track and analyse developments, on deadline.

You will be expected to break news every week, if not every day, and prepare weekly and monthly overviews for your beat.

  1. Your mission: the mission of an cybersecurity and AI reporter is to develop a reader base around the space by breaking stories, analysing and curating stories. The candidate should have an understanding on the Aadhaar rollout and the implications of the same. They should also be tracking major breaches in India and abroad. The candidate should also be covering developments in AI and how it will be deployed across different sectors and view the intersection in those sectors.
  2. Your key outcomes
    1. Monthly reports on your segment, organizing updates
    2. Two key interviews each month from each sub-segment of cyber security/AI
    3. At least two news stories a working day, specific to cyber security/AI and associated businesses
    4. Break at least 6 stories a month
    5. One editorial Point of view a month
    6. Get at least four columns a month from industry insiders.

Eligibility criteria for both positions

We’re looking for candidates with at least 2-3 years of experience in writing about business or technology. You must either know technology or business well. Preferably, both.

  1. What do you want to do? You need to know and be passionate about the digital (Internet and/or mobile) medium in India. You need to live and breathe digital, and be someone who is always connected. This domain should matter to you. You have to tell us what in digital matters to you and why.
  1. What kind of a person are you?
  • You need to be obsessive about details, and have a strong sense of skepticism and understanding of logic. For us, being the best is usually more important than being the first.
  • You need to be comfortable with ambiguity: ours is a fast paced business, you will have to learn to work with limited information at your disposal, and take decisions quickly. You need to have an eye for news, and a desire to get the news first.
  • You need to be social: being active on social networks, especially Twitter, is a must. We’re a part of a community, and support them, just as they support us.
  1. What can you do?
  • You need to have excellent command of the English language – both written and spoken English.
  • Business and/or tech news reporting experience is preferred. Both is ideal. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in reportage on digital businesses.
  • Preference would be given to candidates with online work experience, or at least having blogged for a few years. You need to have basic working knowledge of HTML, and familiarity with WordPress.

Key responsibilities for both the positions

  • Track & report current events & news in Internet and Mobile domain
  • Analyse information and present in a concise manner
  • Talk to hundreds of people in the digital domain. Go get stories. Do interviews. Work with data. Identify trends.
  • Track international developments in Internet and Mobile domains
  • You must be open to taking on additional responsibility during events and conferences.

How we work:

Those in Delhi would need to work out of our office. Those not in Delhi work from home or a cafe. As long as there is connectivity and you’re working, you could be in the hills or on a beach. We’re connected all the time, collaborating on chat, WhatsApp, calls, and online tools. We help each other do better work, and improve with each story. We focus on details, sense trends.
