Gaana crosses 40 million monthly users in September

Times Internet-owned music streaming service Gaana crossed 40 million monthly users for the month of September, announced Times Internet Vice Chairman Satyan Gajwani in a tweet. He also said that the music streaming platform has registered almost 3x growth in the last year, and is the one of the fastest growing business of  Times Internet. 

He also tweeted that Gaana Originals saw over 20 million plays in five weeks. The company had launched Gaana Originals’ last month to showcase work non-film work from Bollywood and regional artists.  Prashan Agarwal, COO, Gaana said in a statement that, most of these songs have grown better than few of the top Bollywood hits.

Gaana’s highlights

Gaana has been strengthening its user base with multi-forked strategies.

Android Auto: In February, Gaana launched an app for Android Auto, letting users stream music via Android compatible phones, vehicles and aftermarket radios.

Regional languages: Tapping local audience, Gaana updated its Android app interface to support 9 Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali, Punjabi and Bhojpuri, in December last year.

Original audio series: Betting on original content, Gaana launched its first original audio series in July last year.

Uber:  In June last year, Gaana partnered with Uber for allowing users to stream songs, which could be done by plugin the aux cable into the car’s system or use Bluetooth to stream music.


Gaana competes with players like Apple Music, Saavn, Airtel’s Wynk, to name some.

Apple Music, which debuted on June 30, 2015 worldwide and on July 1 the same year in India, combines music downloads, radio streaming and music streaming in a single app. Since its launch, it had partnered with multiple players to cater its users in India. Last year, Times Music was appointed as a curator on Apple Music and to provide editor curated recommendations for music catalogs available on the latter.  In October 2015, MTV India became the first local curator for Apple Music, where it would let the latter’s users listen to Bollywood and Indian indie music through curated playlists. The music channel would provide Indie Top 10 series, Coke Studio@MTV, etc.

In March, Airtel’s music streaming application Wynk Music said that it crossed 50 million app downloads. The company added 45% of Wynk users are non-Airtel customers and says that it sees around 100,00 daily app installs. It hit 5 million app downloads in February 2015.

Other Players: Hungama claimed to have crossed 50 million monthly active users worldwide with 2.5 million pieces of music content and 5000 movies. Last year, Google launched its Google Play Music in India, however a buggy app. Player like BookMyShow have also entered the space. Last month, BookMyShow announced that it is upgrading its music service Jukebox with original audio content in multiple languages across categories including horror, sports, bollywood, news and business, kids, comedy, music, entertainment (story-telling, drama, mystery etc.), history, and mythology & devotion.
