By December this year, Flipkart plans to add services on its app that will allow users to book a cab, order food or plan their vacation, reports ET Tech. The company is currently in talk with food delivery, cab and travel aggregators for this. Flipkart’s senior director of monetisation and new initiatives, Prakash Sikaria told the publication that they will be following the same model as WeChat.

Note that Tencent Holding Limited, which developed WeChat, had participated in Flipkart’s latest round of funding, in April this year, along with eBay and Microsoft.

Like Justdial, which will be one of Flipkart’s primary competitors in the services aggregation space, Flipkart has a deep pocket and can invest heavily to bring a mass of service providers onto its platform. However, Justdial Search Plus has the first-movers advantage, and the scale that comes with having vendors that aren’t just online vendors: Justdial has been in the local services listing & discovery business for quite some time now.

Flipkart has the advantage of a wide customer base, and offering them a suite of services on the same app will go a long way in ensuring they spend a larger chunk of their time on Flipkart’s app. So, while shopping on Flipkart they won’t have to exit to order food on Zomato, or book a car on Uber, they can do all of that on Flipkart’s app itself, which can potentially reciprocate into users shopping more.

However, Flipkart needs to learn from Snapdeal, a company Flipkart is reportedly looking to acquire, which had tried the same last year. The company had tied up with Zomato for food deliveries, Cleartrip and redBus for ticket booking, Uber for cab booking and UrbanClap for services. However, currently the services tab through which these could be availed is not visible on Snapdeal’s app.

Competition

– Paytm also has services available on the app such as ticket booking and movie tickets booking, for which it had tied up with redBus, PVR and BookMyShow. It also offers flight bookings. Paytm claims it has more than 2 million travel bookings a month and 3 million movie tickets a month.

– Last year, Helpchat tied-up with the likes of Uber, Ola, Zomato, Bookmyshow, RedBus, Swiggy, and Cleartrip among others, to offer mobile & DTH recharge, cab booking, train & flight ticket booking, online deals & coupons, ordering food, travel planning, booking household services such as plumbers, electricians, etc. on its platform.

– In April this year, Google launched a food delivery and services app in India called Areo. Currently, the services are only available in certain localities in Mumbai and Bengaluru. The app features local restaurants, food delivery services, and home services such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical repair, etc.
