The July 1 deadline to link Aadhaar with PAN for filing income tax returns is just one day away. But those trying to access the Income Tax Department’s e-filing site are facing difficulties.

So, we gave it a shot: when we tried to access the e-filing site the page didn’t open at first. But after repeated attempts it did open and we were able to navigate to the ‘Link Aadhaar‘ page. This took a little more than 10 minutes of repeated attempts. When our colleague Salman tried to access the Link Aadhaar page, a ‘Loading’ message was displayed and then the page froze. It’s possible that these issues have cropped up because a large number of people are trying to access the site at the same time.

Others seem to be facing similar issues:

Note that the current status regarding Aadhaar-PAN stands like this:

a) If you already have an Aadhaar it is mandatory to link it to PAN before July 1.

b) If you do not have an Aadhaar number yet, then you can file your tax returns with just the PAN card(as you did earlier) before July 1.

c) If you want to file your tax returns post July 1, you will either have to furnish your Aadhaar number or provide an Aadhaar enrollment ID as proof that you have applied.

Also, earlier this week, revenue department amended Rule-114 of the Income Tax Act, which addresses application for allotment of PAN, and made Aadhaar mandatory for applying for new PAN cards from July 1, as per this Livemint report.

It’s worth noting the IT Department’s e-filing site currently claims that 2.16 crore Aadhaar number have been linked to the respective PAN cards as of now, and that over 18 lakh e-Verified tax returns have been filed for the financial year 2017-18. Given that about 25 crore PAN cards have been allotted by the IT Department thus far, less than 9% of these PAN card holders have linked their Aadhaar card so far, with a little over a day to go for the deadline.
