PhonePe maintains that it allows interoperability on the UPI

PhonePe says that it allows customers to login with their preferred virtual payment address (VPA) and does not make it mandatory for users to login to the app with a YES Bank handle, founders Rahul Chari and Sameer Nigam clarified in blog post. “Users who’re registered with PhonePe can save their preferred CC/DC card details and won’t need to enter 16 digit card nos every time. Similarly, they’ll be able save their preferred UPI VPAs (including non-ybl handles) with us if they choose to do so,” the post mentioned. Read it here

Indian ISPs block Streamable; Airtel runs ads on block page

Indian ISPs have blocked Streamable, an internet based video streaming service which is used by publishers and bloggers for embedding and monetizing content. We checked, and when accessed on Airtel (mobile) from Delhi, the website features a notice which states “your requested URL has been blocked as per directions received from Department of Telecommunications, Government of India. Please contact administrator for more information.” Read it here

Existing subscriber base should be verified under Aadhaar eKYC: TRAI

India’s telecom regulator TRAI recommends (pdf) that the existing subscriber base should be verified under the Aadhaar-based eKYC (Know Your Customer) process to weed out SIM cards acquired using fake/forged identity. The DoT in partnership with telcos could initiate verification of existing SIM cards in a “phased manner” but the process should remain optional to both service providers and subscribers, added TRAI in its recommendation notice. NowFloats secures $10 million funding from Iron Pillar, IIFL & others

Hyderabad based NowFloats, which helps local businesses get online, has raised $10 million in a Series B round of funding from Iron Pillar and IIFL (Seed Ventures Fund I & Cash Opportunities Fund), and existing investors Blume Ventures & Omidyar Network.

The company will use the funds primarily for customer support and engagement and better it’s technology platform. Read it here

Uber to launch food delivery service UberEATS in India

Cab aggregator Uber is planning to launch UberEATS, its standalone on-demand meal delivery app in India. The company is currently taking user input by asking them to list their favourite restaurants in their city, other than independently getting resturants and cab drivers onboard. Read it here

HT Media isn’t done yet with its “cost optimisation”

“The quarter started on a good note with the festival season. However, subsequent economic dip hit sentiment and therefore the media spend. This in turn impacted advertising revenues for our English and Hindi print business,” Sandeep Jain, Chief Strategy Officer, HT Media, said on the company’s earnings conference call yesterday. Airtel Q3-FY17: decline in Mobile Internet users, usage, revenues, ARPU & more

The free-everything fueled exodus of mobile Internet users to Reliance Jio is real: Airtel, India’s largest telecom operator, reported a massive quarter on quarter decline in every single mobile Internet statistic:

Mobile Internet user base declined around 7.74 million (12%) quarter on quarter to 54.91 million from 62.66 million. This is even lower than the preceding three quarters, and on par with a year ago, when Airtel had reported 54.86 million mobile Internet users. Read it here

Paytm and Freecharge have both launched features to let users recharge Google Play Store accounts with their respective apps. Both companies have added an icon on their apps for the Play store, which users can tap to recharge the account. Read it here

Linkedin contributed revenues of $228M for Microsoft’s Q2FY17 earnings

Linkedin’s overall contribution to Microsoft’s second fiscal quarter (Q2-FY17) was revenues of $228 million, and net income of $100 million. Microsoft mentioned that it completed acquisition Linkedin last month and that its revenue contribution was for the three-week period from December 8th to the end of the second quarter. Read it here

Facebook rolls out USB based physical key logins using Yubico, FIDO

Facebook users now have a new layer of authentication for logins using USB-based physical keys. The company has partnered with security solutions providers Yubico and FIDO Alliance which manufactures USB thumb drives that the can be used to assign cryptographic keys for two-factor authentication.
