After Airtel, Idea unveils free 4G data offers to compete with Jio

Idea Cellular will provide free added data on select recharge packs for both prepaid and postpaid customers as a promotional offer. Existing prepaid subscribers on Idea 4G will get 1 GB of free data on recharges of Rs 348 in addition to unlimited calls and SMS. Idea subscribers recharging with Rs 348 on new 4G handsets will get additional 3GB data for free. Note that the added free data is valid for 28 days and can be availed for a maximum of 13 recharges over a span of 365 days.

For postpaid subscribers, Idea has introduced two new unlimited rental plans at Rs 499 and Rs 999. Postpaid users selecting these packs will also be eligible for free music and movies pack

  • -For Rs 499, Idea will provide unlimited local and STD calls with free incoming along with 3GB of 4G data. Non-4G postpaid users will instead unlimited calling with 1GB free data
  • The Rs 999 postpaid pack will give unlimited local and STD calls with free incoming along with 8GB of bundled 4G data. Non-4G users will get 5GB data.

Apart from this, Idea will provide additional 3GB data on the above mentioned postpaid rental plans, till 31st December ’17 for both existing and new customers upgrading to 4G handsets. To avail the free 3GB monthly data, users with new 4G handsets will need to register here by using Idea mobile Internet. Users cannot register while connected to WiFi.

Competition building up in telecom sector

Idea’s promotional data offers comes just days after Airtel announced similar plans which provides free data of up to 3GB per month to new prepaid and postpaid users till December 31st 2017. However note that Airtel’s offer left out existing users, while Idea’s promo offer includes existing users. Comparing both Airtel’s and Idea’s free data offers, Jio still has an upper hand since it is offering free data and calls to existing as well as new users onboarding the network up till March.

Note that Airtel, Idea, and Vodafone had earlier announced several free tariff offers but this hasn’t stopped subscribers from either migrating to Jio or potentially holding a second Jio SIM. Recent TRAI data revealed that Jio added 19 million new subscribers during the month of October, which was significantly higher than the additions among the top three telecom operators during the same period.
