Facebook India now has 166M users; over 95% users mobile


Social networking site Facebook now has more than 166 million Monthly Active Users (MAUs) in India, out of which at least 159 million MAUs were accessing the site through mobile phones, the company informed MediaNama. A total of 85 million users in India use Facebook daily, while 81 million of them access the website through a mobile device. Overall, mobile devices accounted for over 95% of Facebook’s traffic.

In March this year, Facebook had reported its Indian user base at 142 MAUs, out of which 133 were mobile MAUs. In the same period, Facebook India had 69 million daily active users (DAUs), out of which 64 million DAUs came through mobile. As for its other services, Facebook had reported that it had more than 80 million users visiting its Groups product monthly in India in September.

Internationally, Facebook Lite, which officially launched in India and Philippines in June last year, crossed 100 million users in March this year, while the company’s Messenger app crossed 1 billion monthly active users in July this year. According to Statista, Facebook itself currently has 1,788 million monthly active users worldwide.

Facebook’s India trends for 2016:

The top 10 most talked about topics in 2016 included Diwali, Cricket, Uri attacks and surgical attacks, Mahendra Singh Dhoni movie, Hardwell India tour, Priyanka Chopra, Rio Olympics, Pokemon Go, Pathankot, iPhone 7 launch in that order. The top 10 of this year’s Year in Review was measured by how frequently a topic was mentioned in Facebook posts made between January 1 and November 27, 2016.
