Ola launches outstation cab booking from Pune; charges for round trip

Online cab aggregator Ola has launched Ola Outstation, a cab service from Pune to travel to Lonavala, Mumbai, Nashik and Aurangabad (among other cities it does not mention), which can be booked and accessed in 2 hours from the time of booking.

Under the service, Ola offers Toyota Etios, Tata Indigo and Maruti Dzire cars. However, Ola’s mail to its users states that users can get a cab to “any city in India.” Earlier this month, Mint reported that Ola was planning to launch the outstation service

The company is only accepting cash for these rides currently and the app says that round trip charges will be applicable, although it is not clear if the user needs to compulsorily take a round trip or if it is charging round trip fare for a one way trip. As of now, the company offers cabs at Rs 10 per km under Mini and Sedan cars under Outstation.

Interestingly, users can book a trip for longer than a day, up to 10 days. However, its not clear if Ola is charging its users by kilometers for longer-than-a-day trips or otherwise. Can a user get a cab when they want during their trip, and if yes, how is it any different from booking a regular Ola cab from wherever the user is?

Also, Ola has included a survey in the email which asks questions like what do you rent a cab for, how frequently, through which medium, which car category, preferred time of travel, mode of payment etc.

Ola Lux cars: Note that last week, Ola launched Ola Lux a luxury category of cars starting with South Mumbai. This would include cars like Jaguar, Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Toyota Fortuner, Honda Accord and other high end sedans and SUVs, that can be booked for a minimum fare of Rs 200 plus Rs 19/km and Rs 2/minute. Ola’s move comes just 2 months after Uber shuttered its UberBlack service everywhere in India, except Mumbai.

Uber shutters Auto & Intercity service: In December 2015, Uber put a pause on its uberAUTO service in Delhi which was launched in April 2015. At the time, Uber said, “…We are temporarily removing this product to solve specific problems that need to be resolved to help it scale.” In May 2015, the company launched Uber INTERCITY from Pune to Mumbai and vice versa, and we noticed that the service was no longer available by December.

Ola financials: ANI Technologies, which runs Ola, reported reported Rs 51.05 crore revenue from operations and other income in FY 2013-14. This was a growth of over 200% from Rs 16.4 crore in the preceding financial year. Losses in the period stood at Rs 34.22 crore compared to the loss of Rs 22.8 crore in the previous financial year.
