NDTV’s wedding portal Bandbaajaa goes live


NDTV has launched Bandbaajaa, an online portal for wedding services and shopping. The company had said in December that is would launch such a portal, only it was known as Special Occasion at the time.

Bandbaajaa currently lists various wedding services on the platform, from venues, photographers, DJs and entertainment services, choreographers, bands and dhols, wedding decor, invitations, makeup artists etc. It also lists different kinds of clothing appropriate for brides and grooms for various kinds of weddings which can be sorted based on the theme, colour or culture.

As of now, the company claims to list over 1500 vendors for various services as well as 5000 products for sale. Listings are currently available for over 20 cities including Chennai, Coimbatore, Pune, Mumbai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad etc. The website also has a blog section with various articles about weddings and an inspiration page that offers ideas for various kinds of weddings.

In the wedding planning space, Special Occasion will compete with MyWeddingPlanning, WeddingPlz, WedMeGood (which raised over $400,000 in September last year) and PlanningWale.

Bandbaajaa funding: NDTV had raised funding for two of its new startups Smartcooky (an online marketplace for health foods) and Band BandBaajaa. The two startups have a combined valuation of Rs 724 crore. BandBaajaa’s funding was led by US venture capital firm CerraCap Ventures at a valuation of USD 20 million.

Ecommerce financials: Last month, NDTV’s ecommerce business reported revenues of Rs 4 crore for the quarter ended December 31, 2015. The segment had posted revenues of Rs 6 crore in the same period last year, showing a degrowth of 33.33% year-on-year.

Digital arm financials: NDTV’s digital business reported revenues of Rs 30 crore for the quarter. The segment reported revenues of Rs 30 crore in the same period last year. In the preceding quarter, the digital business reported revenues of Rs 26 crore a growth of 15.38%. The digital business reported a profit of Rs 1 crore in Q2FY15 and reported no profit or loss in the current quarter, i.e. net profit stood at Rs 0.
