India added 5.57M active mobile connections in January’16

According to the Indian telecom regulator TRAI, India added 5.57 million “active” mobile connections during the month of January 2016.


The Active connection data represents peak VLR (Visitor Location Register) data for the month. Some stats:

– There were 917.59 million active connections in the month of January 2016.
– Strangely, Idea has 104.43% of connections active on its network – the highest among all telcos. TRAI says the percentage of active connections is more than 100% due to in-roamers i.e. subscribers from other operators roaming in Idea’s network.
– Vodafone has the second highest active connection base of 97.57%, followed by Airtel at 96.72%.


In terms of the number of active connections, Airtel leads with 237.72 million connections followed by Vodafone at 189.98 million connections.

– Airtel added 2.50 million connections, taking its connection base to 245.78 million.
– Idea added 1.25 million connections, taking its connection base to 173.16 million.
– Vodafone added 1.11 million connections, taking its connection base to 194.71 million.

Statewise data


– In terms of active connections, Kerala leads with 98.13% active connections, followed by Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal. North East has just 81.58% active connections, the lowest among all circles.

– UP (East) has the most number of connections, with 89.87 million connections (89,874,137 connections). Maharashtra is second with 82.32 million connections (82,328,461 connections) and Tamil Nadu is third with 80.89 million connections (80,897,812 connections).

– Bharti Airtel holds the maximum percentage market share of wireless connections at 24.15%, followed by Vodafone at 19.13%, Idea at 17.01%, Reliance at 9.94% and Aircel at 8.45%.
