Groups that work on digital rights in 24 countries, as well as those with an Africa, South East Asia, EU and global focus, have signed a letter to Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of Facebook, outlining their concerns around Internet.org, regarding issues of Net Neutrality (including Zero Rating), Freedom of Expression, Privacy, Security, the creation of a two tiered Internet and a walled garden, and the misleading name of Internet.org (as is evident in the image above), which leads to people confusing it with free Internet. MediaNama, along with SaveTheInternet.in and IT For Change, are three of the organizations/groups from India that have signed this letter. Please note that Facebook is also running a petition on Change.org, misleading those signing, into believing that they're supporting free Internet while supporting Internet.org. The letter, in full: Dear Mark Zuckerberg, We, the undersigned, share a common concern about the launch and expansion of Facebook’s Internet.org platform and its implications for the open Internet around the world. On that open Internet, all content, applications and services are treated equally, without any discrimination. We are especially concerned that access for impoverished people is construed as justification for violations of net neutrality. It is our belief that Facebook is improperly defining net neutrality in public statements and building a walled garden in which the world's poorest people will only be able to access a limited set of insecure websites and services.
