E-commerce marketplace Flipkart has appointed former senior director of engineering at Google Peeyush Ranjan as its head of engineering, reports Re/code. Just like fellow Googler and Flipkart's new chief product officer Punit Soni, Ranjan is expected to report to the CEO of the Commerce Division Mukesh Bansal. In his most recent role, Ranjan headed the engineering team for Google's Android One project. Prior to that, he had served as the VP Engineering of the Motorola Mobility division, till it was a part of Google. Ranjan was with Google for close to 9 years. Before joining Google, Ranjan had worked as the engineering manager for over two years at Hewlett-Packard. He had also worked as a software developer for about 2 years at Microsoft, at the start of his career. This is an important appointment for Flipkart: Ranjan's extensive experience of engineering for mobile devices will come in handy, at a time when the e-tail giant is apparently looking to become an app-only platform. It shut down its mobile site, last month, and is believed to be also considering shutting down its desktop website, even though that seems unlikely because Flipkart stands to lose a major chunk of its customer base. Interestingly, Myntra has already shut down its mobile website and is expected to follow suit with its desktop website on May 1.
