Junglee introduces gift cards on its platform

Amazon India’s e-commerce & price comparison portal Junglee has introduced gift cards on its platform. The company claims to offer over 1400 physical and more than 400 e-gift cards from around 180 brands and retailers like Amazon, Shoppers Stop, BookMyShow, Makemytrip, and Mainland China among others.

The gift cards on offer are from categories such as apparel, footwear, beauty and health, watches and consumer electronics. Plus there are gift cards for holiday packages, short getaways, events, and experience packages including helicopter rides, sailing and golfing among others. Junglee will be delivering these gift cards to the receivers’ home or email them if it’s an e-card.

Interestingly, among the gift cards on offer are those from smaller, local bookstores and restaurants such as Blossom Book House in Bangalore, Patang Revolving Restaurant and Saffron Restaurant in Ahmedabad, and Royal Feast-The Gourmet Box in Mumbai among others.

It’s worth noting that in December last year Amazon had picked up about 15% stake in Bangalore-based store-value-card solutions providers QwikCilver Solutions through its Singapore-based subsidiary Amazon Asia Pacific. QwikCilver claims to currently have retailer clients like Titan, Raymond, Shoppers Stop, Westside and Hidesign among others. It also operates an online gift card & gift vouchers store Giftbig.com, besides powering the gift card service for both Amazon and Flipkart. Also, this investment gave Amazon access to QwikCilver’s semi closed wallet system, which will allow them to offer customers a digital wallet service for purchases from the site. QwikCilver had received a 5-year prepaid mobile wallet license from RBI in August 2013.

Competition: Gift cards aggregator GiftCardsIndia had raised an undisclosed amount in funding from Blume Ventures and Google India managing director Rajan Anandan, in December last year. The company intended to use the funds to expand its team, develop new products and increase its reach. The company claims that it has partnered with over 300 brands for gift cards/vouchers within GCI’s 25,000 points of sale distribution network and also created its own prepaid products. GCI also says it has sold over 250,000 pre paid cards in less than 4 years totaling over $5 million in top line sales. Kshatriya Ventures backed Giftxoxo.com also offers gift vouchers from a number of brands and online stores. Plus e-commerce marketplaces like Amazon & Flipkart also offer gift cards.

Finger in too many pies? Over the past year, Junglee has introduced a number of new features on the site. In May, it started enabling direct purchases via its website, and then added a number of e-commerce platforms including Jabong, Myntra, Lenskart, BabyOye, Zansaar, and HealthKart among others as sellers, besides Amazon. Note that Junglee, though initially just a price comparison portal, was positioned as an advertising service for online merchants in India. The service that was called Product Ads was later rebranded to ‘Sell on Junglee’ ads. It also  introduced a new ‘Post Your Ad’ feature on its site, that enables users to post free advertisements to sell their goods. Readers will remember that Junglee had previously integrated Quikr’s new & old products listings on its individual product pages and category pages.
