YouTube’s India 2014 trends dominated by indie creators

YouTube has unveiled its annual list of top trending videos and music videos for this year with YouTube Rewind 2014. This list is formulated based on the total number of views generated by the video combined with shares, likes and comments it received. Here are some of the India-specific trends mentioned in the list: Top trending YouTube videos (non-music): The full episode of Comedy Nights With Kapil, broadcast on 22nd March, was the top trending YouTube video in India, followed by All India Bakchod video Genius of the year with Alia Bhatt and The Viral Fever Videos skit 'Bollywood Aam Aadmi Party’ on Kejriwal and Arnab. While YouTube did not reveal the break-up of Indian viewers for these videos, Comedy Nights had clocked in 8.8 million global views at the time of writing, while Genius of the Year has over 6.8 million views and Bollywood Aam Aadmi Party has over 4.2 million views. Web-only video channels have gained momentum in the country with 4 of the top 10 videos viewed coming from this category, including The Seatbelt Crew, AIB’s Nayak 2: The common man rises and the aforementioned Genius of the year and the Viral Fever Skit on AAP. Unsurprisingly, the multi channel networks (MCN) space also saw a lot of activity this year, with Disney owned Maker Studio signing up Indian channels like AIB, Kanan Gill among others, TO THE NEW Ventures backed MCN Fame partnering celebrity management firm CAA Kwan to create content around Indian celebrities, Culture Machine…
