Yahoo India 2014 trends: Most searched personalities, financial events, cricketers, movies & more

Yahoo India has released its annual ‘Year In Review’, which lists the biggest trends the company witnessed in 2014. According to Yahoo, the lists are based on its user’s daily search habits and what they read, recommend or share on its network. The trends:

Most searched personalities of 2014

Continuing the trend from last year, the most searched personalities on Yahoo India were mostly from Bollywood, ahead of politicians and athletes. PM Narendra Modi was the most searched for politician, followed by Arvind Kejriwal, Rahul Gandhi, Jayalalithaa and Shashi Tharoor, while among sportspersons, Virat Kohli was the most searched for, followed by Michael Schumacher and Maria Sharapova.

Sunny Leone continued to be the most searched for personality for the third year in a row followed by Poonam Pandey and Shweta Basu Prasad. Others on this list included Anushka Sharma, Alia Bhatt, Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai.

Business luminaries of the year

This list was topped by Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, followed by the Minister of State with Independent Charge for Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley,  Bill Gates and CEO and MD of Infosys Vishal Sikka.

Others on this list included, Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Sahara chief Subrata Roy, Reliance head Mukesh Ambani and e-tailing major heads Sachin, Binny (Flipkart), Mukesh (Myntra), Peeyush (Lenskart) and Rohit (Snapdeal) Bansal, among others.

Financial events of the year

The government’s ‘Make in India’ project, aimed to attract investment, generate jobs and make India a manufacturing hub, was the top financial event of the year according to the report, followed by the Supreme Court decision to de-allocate the coal block allocations made between 1993 and 2010.

Other events that made the list include Comcast’s proposed acquisition of Time Warner Cable, government’s economic policies, airfare wars, SIT of former judges created to bring back black money, drop in international oil prices and Flipkart’s big billion day sale, among others.

Top 10 most wanted gadgets

Unsurprisingly, the iPhone 6, which launched in October in the country, dominated Yahoo searches among tech gadgets, even coming in ninth as the most searched for keyword on Yahoo in 2014. Other Apple products including the iPad mini and the iPad Air made the list, coming in at #5 and #9 respectively. Two Samsung products also made the list with the Galaxy S5 at #2 and the Galaxy Note 4 at #3.

Recording device GoPro HERO came in at #4, with Amazon Kindle Fire and Microsoft Surface Pro 3 also making the list at #7 and #10 respectively. At #6 and #8 come the consoles, with the Xbox One which has sold lesser units globally, surprisingly coming ahead of Sony’s PS4.

Cricketers of the year

Sachin Tendulkar who released his autobiography this year, was the top cricketer for 2014 on Yahoo, followed by Phil Hughes who tragically died after being hit by a bouncer, and Indian captain MS Dhoni. Other Indians on this list included N Srinivasan, Ravi Shastri, Virat Kohli, B Kumar and Rohit Sharma.

Other non Indian cricketers that make the list are Mohammad Amir, Kevin Pietersen, AB de Villiers, Mitchell Johnson, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, David Warner, Misbah-ul-Haq and Saeed Ajmal.

Notable sporting stars of 2014

Sarita Devi, who refused her bronze medal at the Asian Games, after losing her semi-final bout with South Korea’s Park Ji-na, and Mary Kom, who won a gold medal at the Asian Games, make this list. The Indian men’s hockey team’s victory over Pakistan (4-2) and Indian women’s gold medal at 4*100m relay at the same event also make this list.

Others mentioned in the list include Jitu Rai, winner of the silver medal at ISSF world cup in Munich, Saina Nehwal who won the China Open super series premier, P Kashyap who won the gold at Commonwealth Games in Badminton, shooter Abhinav Bindra, and the Indian squash pair Dipika Pallikal and Joshna Chinappa.

Most popular cars of 2014

Tata Zest was the top car on Yahoo for 2014, with the i20, Hyundai Xcent and Maruti Ciaz coming in next. Other in the list include the diesel Honda City, Honda’s MPV Mobilio, the Merc GLA, Mahindra Scorpio, Audi A3 and the Mercedes S class.

Top travel destinations of the year

Goa was the top travel destination for the year, followed by Thekkady Kerala in second place and and the Himalayan hill stations Nainital and Mussoorie coming in third and fourth respectively.

In the fifth place, Yahoo lists Munnar, followed by the hill stations of Lonavala, Manali, Gangtok, the pilgrim destination Puri and the Shevaroy Hills, the highest hills in the Eastern Ghats.

Top 10 Bollywood movies

Shah Rukh Khan starred Happy New year tops Yahoo’s list of bollywood movies for 2014, with Salman Khan starred Kick coming in second and Hrithik Roshan’s Bang Bang, coming in third. Ajay Devgan starrer Singham Returns comes next followed by Ranveer Singh’s Gunday, Alia Bhatt starring 2 States, Ek Villain, Main Tera Hero, Queen and Jai Ho, completing the top 10 list.

Surprisingly, Yahoo also lists Jai Ho as one of the worst movies of the year, along with Ragini MMS2, Humshakals, Entertainment and the shaukeens.
