Mobile transactions contributed for more than 50% of Groupon’s total transactions globally for the quarter ended June 30, 2014 (Q2 2014). Groupon APAC emerging markets head Ankur Warikoo told Medianama that Mobile accounts for 22% of its India business. 

The company mentioned that it reached an all-time high of transactions completed on mobile devices globally in June this year and its cumulative app downloads was nearly 92 million as June this year, up from 80 million as of March this year. Groupon however didn’t disclose any specific information on the exact mobile transactions for the quarter or provide any region-wise split of its mobile transactions.

Average active deals was more than 0.24 million globally at end of the quarter, up from 0.20 million in the previous quarter. Of this, North America region accounted for more than 0.11 million deals (105,000 deals) for the quarter.

Units Sold: Vouchers and products sold before cancellations and refunds increased 79% year-on-year (YoY) to 83 million during the quarter. North America units increased by 8% YoY, while EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) units increased by 10% YoY and Rest of World units which includes India increased by 342% YoY.

Active Customers: Groupon reported 16.1 million active customers in the rest of the world region, up from 15.5 million customers in the previous quarter and 9.6 million customers in the same quarters. Active customers are customers who have purchased a voucher or product in the last 12 months.

Globally, Groupon reported 53.2 million active customers, up from 51.8 million in the previous quarter and 42.6 million in the same quarter last year. North America is the biggest market with 22.6 million active customers for the quarter.

Customer Spend: The average customer spend, i.e. gross billing per active customer was at $119 for the rest of the world region, up significantly from $97 in the previous quarter and from $108 in the same quarter last year.

Interestingly, the average customer spend has been continuously declining in its strongest market North America. It was at $145 for the quarter, up from $147 in the previous quarter and $156 in the same quarter last year.

Globally, the average customer spend was at $137 for the quarter, up from $132 in the previous quarter but down from $138 million in the same quarter last year.

Groupon mentions that unused Groupons per customer has dipped by more than 25% over the past year, and has remained stable for most of 2014.

Kal Raman as new APAC CEO: Groupon COO Kal Raman will be taking over as the CEO of Asia Pacific region. Groupon mentions that this new role will enable Raman to focus on growing the company’s business in the “high-growth Asian markets”. Raman had joined Groupon in November 2012 and was previously overlooking the company’s global sales and operations.

Last June, Groupon had promoted its India CEO Ankur Warikoo to head the emerging markets in Asia Pacific. This includes India, Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines.

Goods revenue vs Local revenues vs Travel revenues

The revenue from goods segment in the rest of the world region was at $45.54 million for the quarter, up from $41.86 million in the previous quarter and more than double of $20.61 million in the same quarter last year. The total goods revenue was at $402.6 million for the quarter, up 66.5% YoY.

Local revenues i.e. revenues generated from deals through local & national merchants and deals through local events in the rest of the world region was at $42.7 million for the quarter, down from $43.8 million in the previous quarter and $43.85 million in the same quarter last year. Worldwide, the local revenues was at $303.7 million for the quarter, down 8.4% YoY.

Travel revenues for the rest of the world region was at $11.71 million for the quarter, up from $10 million in the previous quarter and $7.1 million in the same quarter last year. Worldwide, travel revenues was at $45.3 million for the quarter, up 27.6% YoY.

Financials

Groupon reported revenues of $99.96 million in the rest of the world region, up 39.6% YoY from $71.6 million in the same quarter last year. The operating loss for the region also increased to $18 million for the quarter, up from $14 million in the same quarter last year.

Overall revenues grew by 23% YoY to $751.6 million for the quarter, from $608.7 million in the same quarter last year. The net loss was at $22.9 million for the quarter, a significant increase from $7.6 million in the same quarter last year.
