YourBus_logoNaspers owned IbiboGroup has acquired bus tracking company YourBus that provides in-bus GPS tracking solutions. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. One YourBus founder and the team will now join redBus.

YourBus, that was part of the Morpheus Gang, was founded by Rajesh Mallipeddi and Satya Padmanabham in 2011 and the service is functional in 200 buses as of now. The acquisition will enable the YourBus team to expand its reach to thousands of buses. The service will be integrated into redBus which IbiboGroup had acquired last year for 1 billion rand and with its own travel website GoIbibo. redBus will also offer the solutions offered by YourBus to bus operators, so they can improve efficiency of the fleet.

The integration will effectively let people who book their bus tickets with these services track the bus they are supposed to travel in. It needs to be noted that redBus had already integrated the service a year back, but the service was not exclusive to redBus and was used by PayTM as well.

Apart from live tracking of the bus for passengers, YourBus also offers Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) report so that bus agencies can inform passengers when the bus will reach the boarding point. The other service it offers includes halt report that vehicle owners can use to track the number of unauthorized stops the bus made in a journey and punctuality report which shows a snap shot of the time taken by all buses.

YourBus

YourBus competes against AssetTrackr which raised $500,000 from three angel investors last year. Live tracking has become a must have feature in all transport related services. Almost all cab services have been offering live tracking of cars for the past six months, after Uber entered the market. However, the number of buses using this feature as of now is very low compared to the number of buses available on redBus. Hopefully the website can convince more bus owners to set up live tracking.

How does the YourBus integration work: Around 30 minutes before the bus journey starts, it will send an SMS to the passengers with the registration number of the bus along with a link to track their bus on Google Maps. Passengers who have installed redBus app, will get a similar notification on their mobile phones to track the exact location of bus based on its GPS updates.
