Delhi court has dismissed a plea by Loop Telecom Limited requesting the court to refer a case related to 2G scam probe to Lok Adalat for settlement, reports PTI. Loop Telecom (LTL) had argued that the company was facing trial for the alleged offence under section 420 (cheating) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy). Essar Group promoters Ravi Ruia and Anshuman Ruia, Loop Telecom promoters Kiran Khaitan, her husband IP Khaitan and Essar Group Director (Strategy and Planning) Vikash Saraf are facing trial in the case along with three firms — LTL, Loop Mobile India Ltd and Essar Tele Holding Ltd.

Passport services at Common Service Centres

The Ministry of External Affairs is launching passport related services through the one lakh Common Services Centers (CSC) in rural areas. The CSC scheme for setting up of 100,000+ (One Lakh+) Internet enabled centers in rural areas was approved by the government in September 2006. The CSCs will help applicants filling and uploading of form, payment of applicable fee and scheduling of appointment for the visit to the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) at a fee not exceeding Rs 100. Why is ITI still around?

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved financial assistance of Rs 200 crore in the form of a soft loan to Indian Telephone Industries Ltd (ITI) which had incurred accumulated losses of Rs. 4,527 Crore till 31.03.2013.  The loan will be used for paying salary to its employees. The company has been dependent on orders from BSNL and MTNL which seem to be on the decline leading to the current situation. It is not clear why the government is keeping this company alive. Wouldn’t it make more sense to shift the employees and wind down this PSU? Read more here.

Automated tea-quality monitoring systems handed over mass production

Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) has handed prototypes of E-Nose, E-Vision and E-Tongue systems that help measure quality of tea, to Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd , Hyderabad and Electronics Research and Development Enterprise Ltd, Kolkata for mass production. The systems dubbed ‘ENOVision’ and ‘ETongue’ was developed by Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) under the National Program For Perception Engineering (NPPE). Read more here.

DoT suggestions on securing ADSL modems

DoT has issued a set of security measures that ISPs need to adopt for securing ADSL modems against misuse. The suggestions range from changing the default password to disabling certain ports. DoT also asked ISPs to maintain a system through which the firmware of these devices can be updated in case a flaw is discovered. See the complete list here.
