Samsung bundles free WiFi, cheaper 3G with Galaxy Grand 2 purchase

Samsung has tied-up with Idea cellular and You Broadband to offer free WiFi and affordable data bundle for those buying Galaxy Grand 2 it launched here in December. Those who buy the device can get 1,000 mins and 1GB 3G data every month, apart from 50 minutes on roaming and 250 SMS for Rs 349. Samsung has also tied-up with You Broadband to offer free 5GB of use every month via the WiFi hotspots it has set up with the ISP.

Do note that You Broadband has only a few hotspots in the country, mostly in cities to the west and a few standalone ones in Vizag, Delhi (airport area) and Gurgaon (MG Road). These hotspots will be called ‘Samsung WiFi hotspot’ so there is no confusion among the buyers who are trying to use the service. Like with all free hotspots the registration involves typing in your name, email-id, phone number and keying an activation code that is sent you as an SMS. It is not clear if there’s a limit on the length of the session or if there is a daily data cap.

It’s not clear who is picking up the cheque for all these freebies or discounted services that are being offered. While the Idea offer is valid for 18 months after purchasing the device, it’s not clear how long the hotspots will be active. This might be a sign of things to come as people are not generally willing to pay for WiFi in India. It is also not clear if the offer is restricted to those who buy from Samsung’s official store or if it will be available for those who buy from other channels as well.

Competition: Samsung is facing increased competition from Indian companies such as Micromax and Karbonn apart from bigger companies such as Lenovo and Motorola that are trying to enter the Indian market. The other companies have been able to undercut Samsung in terms of pricing till now, so such offers might make their mid-range devices more attractive to consumers again. We think the company should extend this deal to other phones too in the future.

In the past, Micromax had tied-up with Aircel for a bundled handset offers for several of its smatphones and dongles. Aircel offered Rs 10,000 worth free WAP content over three months and a three months free subscription of its TV on mobile service Popkorn TV for Aircel subscribers on Micromax phones. It also offered free 2GB data per month for 3G phones and 500MB free per month free data for three months for 3G dongles.
