Mobile app Phone Warrior has raised $550,000 seed investment from Lightspeed Venture Partners, reports TechCrunch. The company plans to use the investment raised for strengthening its marketing efforts. It claims to have one million users and hopes to increase this by ten fold to 10 million users.

Founded by Chandan Gupta and Vaibhav Padlikar, New Delhi based Phone Warrior is a call and SMS blocker mobile app, which allows users to block specific phones numbers. It also relies on crowd sourced data and machine learning to classify phone numbers as spam and automatically blocks frequent spammers around the user’s location. The app claims to have blocked more than 27.2 million calls and messages until now.

Besides this, Phone Warrior also offers caller ID information of unknown callers during an incoming call and allows users to look up numbers from their call logs and text messages. The company claims to have a database of more than 300 million phone numbers and claims to be adding around 10 million new numbers on a weekly basis.

The company currently offers a free version on Android, BlackBerry and Nokia phones and a pro version costing Rs 150 on BlackBerry. It plans to launch an iOS app in January 2014.

It also plans to launch a directory search service like its competitor TrueCaller in the future, although we hope that unlike Truecaller, it provides users with control on whether their number can be shared by one of their contact or not. Optinno also offers a similar SMS and call blocker app called SMS Blocker which scans the incoming messages for spam messages and automatically blocks them. One can also block SMS based on the sender, content word or by a number series or block calls from specific numbers. While the app is free, it offers an in-app purchase for consumers which offers additional features like backup and restore app data, password protection and the ability to send auto response to blocked SMS among others.

There’s also India Against Spam which actually goes one step further and allows users to report spam text messages and calls to TRAI in a single click. It also allows one to register or deregister their phone number from any specific category or all categories under the Do Not Disturb service
