As an indication of growing importance of social media in politics, Facebook has mentioned that Narendra Modi was the most talked about topic on its platform in India during 2013.

Facebook said it calculated the most talked about topics by measuring how many Facebook posts in 2013 mentioned a specific topic and then ranking these topics based on the overall number of mentions. These mentions include both the term itself and related hashtags.

Narendra Modi was followed by cricketer Sachin Tendulkar who retired after his 200th cricket test match last month and iPhone 5S which Apple had announced in September 2013 and launched in India last month.

Raghuram Rajan who was appointed as the new RBI governor in September 2013 and ISRO’s Mars orbiter mission Mangalyaan made up for the remaining positions in the list of most talked topics on Facebook in 2013.
