The Ministry of Finance has announced that till July 30, 92.03 lakh returns had been filed online, which is 46.8% higher than the returns e-filed in the corresponding period last financial year. This follows an earlier announcement that it received more than 82 lakh income tax returns e-filed till July 29, 2013, indicating that more than 10 lakh IT returns were e-filed in a single day.
The surge in online income tax returns filing can be attributed to the fact that this year the ministry of finance has made filing returns electronically mandatory for citizens who earn above 5 lakh per annum.
It also claimed that on July 30, 2013, 6.23 lakh returns were filed online till 6 PM, recording a peak of more than 85,000 returns filed per hour. While the ministry played its trumpet over the record achieved, a lot of users were not able to access the portal to file their income tax returns online. The ministry blamed the problems on network constraints of the local internet service providers (ISPs) and has extended the due date of filing of returns from July 31, 2013 to August 5, 2013.
